Kearney Public School Board had a large turn out last night in regard to two policies that would affect participation in athletics for transgender students.

The board heard 2 hours and 10 minutes of public comment last night.

Among those that attended and spoke were community leaders, medical experts, and LGBTQ advocates.

After addressing other agenda items, the board discussed both policies.

The board moved to vote on Policy A.

Policy A would only allow students 6-12 grade levels to participate in athletics that align with their biological sex at birth or subsequent court order. However, any student regardless of birth sex may participate in any extracurricular activity that allows both boys and girls to participate.

Policy A was given first round approval, with four AYE’s and two NAY’s.

Policy A will be discussed during next month’s meeting.
