NEBRASKA BASKETBALL DROPS STUNNER AGAINST MINNESOTA IN BIG TEN TOURNEY:

For the fourth time in the Fred Hoiberg era, Nebraska men’s basketball has failed to advance beyond the first round of the Big Ten Conference Tournament.

The Huskers closed the regular season with six wins in the final eight games but fell to the 14 seed Minnesota Wednesday night in Chicago, 78-75. Minnesota, which had fallen twice to Nebraska during the season, became the first 14 seed to notch a win in the Big Ten Tournament since 2017.

Tominaga finished with a game-high 23 points. Griesel notched a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Derrick Walker and Lawrence scored 12 points each.

Nebraska will now wait to see if a postseason invite to the NIT or CBI comes to extend the 2022-23 campaign.

NEBRASKA BASKETBALL POST-BIG TEN TOURNAMENT COMMENTS:

HOIBERG – LOSS HURTS; FOCUS ON POSITIVES:

After a loss in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday to Minnesota, Nebraska Basketball Head Coach Fred Hoiberg said that this loss cuts a little deeper considering the late season run by the Big Red…

The Huskers now await a postseason invite to the NIT or CBI to extend their season.

GREISEL – SMILE BECAUSE IT HAPPENED:

Senior transfer Sam Greisel is a Lincoln native who returned for his final season of college basketball to play for his hometown team. He gave his initial perspective knowing his time may be up for the Huskers after a loss to Minnesota in the Big Ten Tournament…

Nebraska will lose three players – including Derrick Walker and Greisel – due to eligibility. Keisei Tominaga could return if he decides not to pursue professional basketball in Japan.

HUSKER BASEBALL RUN RULES NORTHERN COLORADO:

Cole Evans belted two of Nebraska’s five home runs in a 14-3 run-rule win in seven innings vs. Northern Colorado on Wednesday afternoon at Hawks Field.

The five NU homers are the most for the Big Red in a game since hitting five in an 18-10 win at No. 12 Arizona State on March 1, 2020. Nebraska has now homered in 11 consecutive games, tying the 2004 team for the longest streak in program history since at least 1992.

Caleb Clark recorded his first win as a Husker after pitching 2.1 one-hit innings and striking out four.

Nebraska welcomes Illinois State to Hawks Field this weekend for a three-game series. First pitch in the series opener between the Huskers and Redbirds is set for 4:05 p.m. on Friday.

LOPER MEN’S T&F EARN ALL-CENTRAL REGION HONORS:

Seven members of the Nebraska Kearney men’s track and field team have earned 2023 All-Central Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

First, the DMR team of Payton Davis (David City), Wes Ferguson (Fremont), Luke Stuckey (McCool Junction) and Micah Swedberg (Wallace) ranked third in the Central thanks to a 9:44.48. Next, Ferguson is tops in the 800 (1:48.25) with Stuckey having the fourth best time in the mile (4:04.95). Also on the track, Ainsworth redshirt junior Ben Arens made the list in both the 3,000 (4th/8:16.45) and 5,000 (5th/14:28.07). Finally, representing UNK in the field is Giltner redshirt junior weight thrower Alex Goracke (3rd/64-1) and Kearney senior high jumper Brayden Sorsenen (T-4th/7-0.25).

The DMR team, Ferguson, Stuckey, Goracke and Sorensen all compete at this weekend’s NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach.

JIM BOEHEIM RETIRES FROM SYRACUSE:

Jim Boeheim enrolled at Syracuse in 1962. Played there until 1966. Started coaching there in 1969. Took over the program as head coach in 1976.

Put simply, he was Syracuse basketball. Until now.

The Basketball Hall of Famer’s 47-year tenure as coach at Syracuse came to an awkward end on Wednesday, with the university saying Orange associate head coach and former Syracuse player Adrian Autry has been promoted to the job.

The Orange moved quickly, making the announcement less than three hours after Syracuse lost to Wake Forest in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.

Autry has been on Boeheim’s staff since 2011, and held the title of associate head coach since March 2017.

HUSKER BASKETBALL LEGEND ANDRE SMITH PASSES:

Former Husker men’s basketball great Andre Smith passed away over the weekend at the age of 64.

The Chicago, Ill., native was a three-year starter for Joe Cipriano and Moe Iba, helping the Huskers to three Big Eight Conference runner-up finishes in his career.

A two-time first-team All-Big Eight selection, Smith’s senior season was one of the best in school history. The 6-foot-7 forward was named the 1981 Big Eight Player of the Year, as he averaged 18.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

Smith is one of only two conference players of the year in program history, while Smith also earned AP Honorable-Mention All-America honors in 1981.

Smith’s name is all over the Husker record books more than four decades following his collegiate career, as well as he is fourth on NU’s all-time scoring list with 1,717 points while he also ranks in the top-10 in school charts in career rebounds.
