BOYS STATE BASKETBALL SEMIFINALS SET:

Semifinals are set for all classes entering today for the Nebraska Boys State Basketball Championships. 

In yesterday’s action, York outgunned Scottsbluff in Class B 67-54, while Amherst won a thrilling overtime matchup against Norfolk Catholic. Doniphan-Trumbull fell to Tri County 56-41. SEM pushed past Osceola and Shelton had a late controversial call go the Bulldogs way, earning a 72-68 win over Santee.

Area teams in action today include: #6 York battling #2 Platteview in Class B at 3:15 PM, Amherst faces Tri County at 3:15 PM in Class C2, #1 North Platte St. Pats takes on Dundy County Stratton at 9 AM in D1, and in Class D2 #1 Wynot aims to take down SEM while Shelton will battle with Parkview Christian at 6 PM and 7:45 PM respectively.

Full results, game times, locations, and more can be found at the NSAA website. Championships games are set for Saturday for all classes at Pinnacle Bank Arena with select classes third place games at Lincoln Southeast. 

 

UNK WOMEN’S HOOPS AIM TO ADVANCE AGAINST PITT STATE IN NCAA TOURNEY:

The 10th-ranked Nebraska Kearney women’s basketball team faces Pittsburg State in an NCAA Tournament game Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Duluth, Minn.

The game is part of the eight-team Central Regional with UNK (28-4) the second-seed and the Gorillas (22-7) the seventh. The winner plays again Saturday at 5 p.m. against either No. 18 Missouri Southern State or No. 29 Augustana.

UNK has win five in a row over their MIAA rivals, taking this year’s games by scores of 70-55 and 70-67. 

 

HUSKER BASEBALL SET TO BEGIN SERIES WITH ILLINOIS STATE:

Nebraska continues its homestand this weekend, welcoming Illinois State to Hawks Field for a three-game series.

The series opener is set for 4:05 p.m. on Friday, while first pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. The two teams wrap up the series on Sunday in the series finale at 1:05 p.m.

Nebraska is unbeaten against Illinois State, holding a 4-0 all-time record against the Redbirds.

Nebraska enters this weekend’s series having homered in 11 consecutive games.

KGFW’s pregame begins at 3:30 PM today. 

 

LOPER WRESTLING BEGINS NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS:

The UNK Wrestling team has three top seeds among their six qualifiers for the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships beginning today and running through Saturday in Cedar Rapids, IA. 

Omaha redshirt junior Billy Higgins is the top-seed at 184 pounds, Kearney redshirt senior Lee Herrington is second at 285 lbs. with Kansas redshirt senior Austin Eldredge third at 174 lbs. Also headed to Iowa are Kearney redshirt junior Nick James (141 lbs.), New Jersey senior John Burger (149 lbs.) and St. Louis redshirt freshman Kaden Hart (165 lbs.)

Each wrestler is guaranteed two matches for first and second round matchups today.

UNK SOFTBALL HAS HOME OPENERS PUSHED BACK:

The Nebraska Kearney’s home openers against Missouri Western State and Northwest Missouri State have been pushed back two days due to weather and field conditions.

The Lopers (9-13) will now face the Bearcats (12-6) on Sunday at 2/4 p.m. On Monday, the double header vs. the Griffons (10-3) will start at noon. The games will be played at Patriot Park, Field 7. Fans not in attendance can follow along via The MIAA Network and with live stats.

UNK has spent the past five weekends on the road, racking up 4,700 miles in the process.

 

HUSKER SOFTBALL CONTINUES NON-CONFERENCE PLAY IN SHOCKER CLASSIC:

The Nebraska softball team (14-6) continues its non-conference schedule as the Huskers travel to Wichita, Kan., this weekend, March 10-12, for the Shocker Classic. NU will face two teams including its seventh-ranked opponent in No. 23 Wichita State while playing a total of four games. 

The Big Red will open with Wichita State today. The game is set to begin at 5 p.m. (CT). 

On Saturday, the Huskers will take on Missouri State at 12 p.m. (CT). Following the completion of game one, NU will take on the Shockers for the second time at approximately 2:30 p.m. (CT). 

Nebraska will finish the weekend with one game on Sunday. The Huskers will face the Bears at 12 p.m. (CT).

GREISEL – SMILE BECAUSE IT HAPPENED:

Senior transfer Sam Greisel is a Lincoln native who returned for his final season of college basketball to play for his hometown team. He gave his initial perspective knowing his time may be up for the Huskers after a loss to Minnesota in the Big Ten Tournament…

Nebraska will lose three players – including Derrick Walker and Greisel – due to eligibility. Keisei Tominaga could return if he decides not to pursue professional basketball in Japan.

 

NEBRASKA T&F SET FOR INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Ten members of the Nebraska track and field team will head to Albuquerque, N.M. for the NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend. The two-day meet beings on Friday at 11 a.m. (CT) and Saturday at 11:30 a.m. (CT). 

The Huskers secured 11 bids to the NCAA Indoor Championships, the most for the Huskers at the NCAA Indoor Championships since 2011. 

The top 16 student-athletes in each event qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships each year. Nebraska’s qualifiers are Mayson Conner (high jump), Lishanna Ilves (long jump), Axelina Johansson (shot put), Taylor Latimer (weight throw) Darius Luff (60m hurdles), Maxwell Otterdahl (shot put and weight throw), Jenna Rogers (high jump), Brithton Senior (60m hurdles), Till Steinforth (heptathlon) and Jonah Wilson (shot put). 

 

HUSKER VOLLEYBALL BEGINS NINE-DAY BEACH TRIP IN HAWAII:

The Nebraska beach volleyball team will play 12 matches over the next nine days in Hawaii and California.

On Friday, the Huskers will begin the Heineken Queens Cup at 2:15 p.m. (CT) against No. 11 California on Queen’s Beach in Honolulu. NU will also play No. 9 Hawaii at 4:45 p.m. (CT) on Friday. The Huskers are back on Queen’s Beach on Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) against Texas and 3:30 p.m. (CT) against No. 14 Washington. NU will play Oregon at 2 p.m. (CT) on Sunday on the final day of the tournament. 

Before leaving Hawaii, on Tuesday, March 14 the Huskers will battle the Rainbow Wahine one more time at the Ching Complex at 2 p.m. (CT).
