NEBRASKA BASEBALL FALL TO MAVERICKS AT HOME:

Nebraska dropped a midweek matchup vs. Omaha on Tuesday, falling 10-6 at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

Nebraska (9-5-1) scored six runs on nine hits and three errors, while the Mavericks (6-8) had 10 runs on 10 hits and committed one error.

Michael Garza made his first start with the Huskers, allowing three hits and striking out five in three scoreless innings. Shay Schanaman dropped to 1-2 on the season after allowing three runs, two earned, on a pair of hits in two innings.

Nebraska heads to Manhattan, Kan., for this weekend’s series against Nicholls. The series opener between the Huskers and Colonels is set for 11 a.m. on Thursday at Tointon Family Stadium.

 

HUSKER WOMEN BEGIN WNIT AT HOME AGAINST MISSOURI STATE:

The Nebraska women’s basketball team earned a spot in the 2023 Postseason WNIT and will play host to Missouri State in the tournament’s first round on Wednesday in Lincoln.

Tip-off between the Huskers (16-14, 8-10 Big Ten) and the Lady Bears (20-11, 14-6 Summit) is set for 6 p.m. (CT) at Pinnacle Bank Arena. KGFW’s pregame coverage begins at 5:45 PM. 

Nebraska will be making its 23rd overall postseason tournament appearance, including its seventh in the Postseason WNIT, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2023.

The Huskers earned their third straight postseason bid, including a trip to the 2022 NCAA Tournament and an appearance in the 2021 WNIT.

Missouri State comes to Lincoln for the opening round of the Postseason WNIT after finishing fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season standings. The Lady Bears went 14-6 in the Valley on their way to a 20-11 overall mark.

 

LOPER VOLLEYBALL ADDS LINCOLN NATIVE, NORTHWEST TRANSFER:

UNK Volleyball is already gearing up for another return to the NCAA Tournament by adding some state-grown firepower in Lincoln native and graduate transfer Jaden Ferguson from conference rival Northwest Missouri State.

Ferguson has started 26 times for the Bearcats, playing right side and ranking in the MIAA’s top ten in hitting percentage, total kills, points per set, and had 20 double-figure kill matches this past season. 

The Lincoln Southwest alum was a third team AVCA All-American and first team All MIAA this past season. 

Loper Volleyball is currently in their spring season in Florida, and will return to competition in Nebraska taking on Regis in Ogallala on Apr. 6.

 

SHELTON ADDS GIRLS WRESTLING:

Shelton Public Schools is officially adding girls wrestling to its high school activities offerings, as voted on unanimously by the school board Monday night. The Bulldogs announced the news in a tweet Tuesday.

At least two girls are confirmed to be participating for Shelton next season. Competition is set to begin immediately when the new season begins in winter of 2023.

The high school boys program produced its first state champion in 31 years this past season, when Sebastian Sauceda won the Class D 113-pound title.

 

HUSKER SOFTBALL TAKES ON OMAHA IN MIDWEEK DOUBLEHEADER:

The Nebraska softball team will face Omaha in a midweek doubleheader this Wednesday, March 15 in Omaha, Neb. The first game is set for 4 p.m. while game two is set to begin at approximately 6:30 p.m. 

The Huskers (16-8) are coming off of a 2-2 weekend at the Shocker Classic with an offense that leads the Big Ten in the numerous categories including batting average (.321), hits (204), doubles (47) and slugging percentage (.519). Junior Billie Andrews leads the conference with nine home runs and is in the top five in slugging percentage (.780), hits (30) and doubles (7). 

Omaha (13-6) went 3-1 last weekend at the Bulldog Invitational.

 

UNK WOMEN’S GOLF ENDS RUNNER-UP IN HILLCAT CLASSIC:

The 47th-ranked Nebraska Kearney women’s golf team opened up the spring season by finishing runner up at the Hillcat Classic Tuesday in Owasso, Okla.

The Lopers had rounds of 328 and 305 (633) to trail only 37th-ranked RSU (308-301; 609). Missouri Western (634) was one of three teams between 634-637 strokes.

Super senior Faviola Gonzalez (Cayey, P.R.) fired a 5-over par 77 on Monday to be in second place but had to withdraw on Tuesday due to injury.

Colombian sophomore Juliana Botero Molina tied for fourth (154; 83-71) to lead UNK. She had 23 pars and was among the scoring leaders on both par 4 (+5) and par 5 (-1) holes.

UNK heads to Warrensburg, Mo., on Monday for the annual Midwest Intercollegiate.
