KEARNEY GIRLS SOCCER WINS OVER ISLANDERS:

The Kearney girls played most of the contest in Grand Island’s side of the field, holding a 2-0 lead at halftime and firing off rounds of shots on goal to earn their first win on the season 3-0 over the Islanders Thursday night at Kearney High School.

Senior Delaney Junker knocked in her first goal of the season at the six minute mark. After more attempts on the Islanders’ freshman goalkeeper, an illegal touch set up a Harley Straka penalty kick that was knocked in the low right corner for the second score of the contest.

The Bearcats earned a third goal late in the second half as the Islanders juggled and misplayed a ball inside the six, rolling in to drop Grand Island 3-0 on opening night.

Kearney is off until Tuesday when they take on Fremont on the road.

HUSKER WOMEN SET TO PLAY PANTHERS SUNDAY IN WNIT:

The Nebraska women’s basketball team will play host to Northern Iowa in the second round of the 2023 Postseason WNIT at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m. (CT).

Nebraska earned the right to host after posting a 74-65 win over Missouri State in front of 4,116 fans at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Wednesday night. The WNIT made Nebraska’s hosting responsibilities official following Northern Iowa’s 88-76 victory over Colorado State

Maya McDermott led four Northern Iowa players in double figures in Thursday night’s win over Colorado State. McDermott scored 21 points and dished out five assists while Kam Finley added 19 points.

Sunday’s game will mark the first meeting between Nebraska and Northern Iowa since the teams faced off in the first round of the 2016 Postseason WNIT at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The Panthers edged the Huskers 64-62. Nebraska leads the all-time series with UNI 6-1.

NEBRASKA BASEBALL SET FOR DOUBLEHEADER IN MANHATTAN TODAY:

Weather permitting, the Nebraska Baseball team is set to host a doubleheader against Nicholls today in Manhattan, Kansas.

Thursday’s contest was canceled about twenty minutes before the scheduled first pitch as the rain soaked field at K-State’s Family Stadium was too damp to play.

Today’s first pitch for the opening game of the doubleheader is set for 1 PM. The first contest will be a seven inning matchup, with the second game set to begin immediately after the opening game.

KGFW’s pregame begins at 12:30 PM today.

LOPER SOFTBALL HAS MISSOURI WESTERN STATE TOURNEY CANCELED; HEADING TO IOWA:

The weekend schedule for the Nebraska Kearney softball team has changed due to wintry weather in the area.

The Lopers (12-14, 3-1 MIAA) were to have played five games at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Classic in St. Joseph, Mo., Friday through Sunday. That entire tournament has been canceled.

UNK will now head to Council Bluffs, Ia., on Tuesday (March 21) to play Augustana in a double header that begins at 1 p.m. The games will be held at Iowa Western C.C.’s softball field. The Lopers will remain in Iowa and head over to Fayette on Wednesday (March 22) to take on Upper Iowa. That double dip starts at noon.

Finally, the long week will conclude with a MIAA double header at Fort Hays State on Saturday (March 25).

STORM SET TO HOST MUSKETEERS FOR ST. PATTY’S DAY:

NEBRASKA WRESTLING BEGINS DAY 2 OF NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Five Huskers advance to the 2023 NCAA Championship quarterfinals after claiming victories in their respective second round matches on Thursday evening. Seven qualifying Nebraska wrestlers remain alive as the team ends the first day in sixth with 15.5 points.

Liam Cronin (125), Brock Hardy (141), Peyton Robb (157), Mikey Labriola (174), and Silas Allred all advanced. Bubba Wilson (165) moved down to the consolation bracket.

UNK TENNIS BEATS D1 NIAGARA:
The now 36th-ranked Nebraska Kearney tennis team swept doubles and won a couple of third set tie breakers to down the Division I Niagara (N.Y.) University Purple Eagles, 5-2, Thursday night in Orlando, Fla.

The Lopers (9-7) had seen duals against Rollins College and Palm Beach Atlantic rained out during their “Spring Break” trip so this dual was added to the schedule. Earlier on Thursday, NU (3-9) was swept by Farleigh Dickinson (N.J.) at the U.S. Tennis Association National Campus.

Weather permitting, UNK faces No. 29 Florida Southern (10-2) Friday at 2 p.m. Central in Lakeland.
