HUSKER BASEBALL ENDS SEASON IN BIG TEN TOURNEY; ANDERSON AND WALSH NAMED ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM:

Nebraska scored twice and brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t plate the tying run in a 4-2 season ending loss against top-seeded Maryland in the Big Ten Baseball Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Omaha.

Nebraska ends the season with a 33-23-1 record.

Nebraska’s Max Anderson and Will Walsh were named to the 2023 Big Ten Baseball All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Anderson hit .444 at the plate with a tournament-high eight hits in four games. The junior had one double, an RBI, two runs scored and was walked twice. Anderson was 4-for-5 in an elimination game against Michigan State to become the first player in the country to reach the 100-hit mark this season.

Walsh went 2-0 in 10.2 innings of work in the tournament. Walsh posted a 0.00 ERA and eight strikeouts while allowing just five hits.

Maryland’s Nick Lorusso was named Most Outstanding Player after leading the Terrapins to the tournament title and a perfect 4-0 record on the week. He hit the walk-off home run to down Nebraska on Thursday night.

FERGUSON CLAIMS THE 800 M TITLE THREE-PEAT; LOPER T&F CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP:

Fremont redshirt junior Wes Ferguson won his third 800-meter national title with a strong backstretch and in a meet-record 1:45.46 Saturday night at the 2023 NCAA Division II Championships in Pueblo, Colo.

The Loper men finished with eight All-Americans; they had nine at last year’s outdoor championships and seven at this year’s NCAA indoor event. The haul this weekend was good for 16th place (21 points).

Next, Kearney senior Brayden Sorensen is now the sixth four-time All-American in UNK history. He tied his career-best (7-1.75) in the high jump to come in fourth.

76ers ADD FORMER NBA CHAMPION RAPTORS COACH NICK NURSE:

Nick Nurse has agreed to become the next head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers. Nurse, the 2020 Coach of the Year winner, spent the previous five seasons as the head coach of the Toronto Raptors. He led the Raptors to their first championship in 2019, and now, Philadelphia hopes he’ll take them back to the Finals for the first time since 2001.

In Philadelphia, Nurse will take over a 76ers team that has a number of playoff disappointments on its recent resume. Nurse was a part of one of them in 2019 when his Raptors knocked the Sixers out in the second round on Kawhi Leonard’s Game 7 buzzer-beater.

Under Doc Rivers, the 76ers have been knocked out in the second round three years in a row, including as the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference in 2021 and with a 3-2 lead against Boston this season.
