The Kearney Runza Seniors earned their first win of the CWS Creighton Prep Tournament on Thursday night, taking down Bryant, Ark. 11-0.

Kearney (12-11) won, scoring eleven runs on eight hits and two errors, while Bryant fell scoring no runs with one hit and two errors.

The Runza Seniors are back in action today at Millard South High School facing Sheridan, Wyo. at noon and Fremont around 2:30 PM. Full game recaps can be found at KGFW.com.

HUSKER ATHLETICS MOVES TO UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT UMBRELLA:

University of Nebraska System President Ted Carter will now assume UNL’s seat on the Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors, which is the board that oversees the policies, budget, operations and commissioner of the Big Ten Conference.

The move was part of a greater motion during Thursday’s Board of Regents meeting. The motion passed unanimously.

This move officially seats Carter as the new direct supervisor of athletic director Trev Alberts. Carter and Alberts worked together in the hiring of head football coach Matt Rhule last fall.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL ADDS OMAHA NORTH DEFENSIVE BACK:

Nebraska added a third in-state player to its 2024 recruiting class. Omaha North defensive back Donovan Jones officially announced his commitment to the Huskers after taking an official visit to Lincoln this week.

Jones was offered by Nebraska this past Saturday after a strong showing at NU’s Friday Night Lights Camp. That same night, he earned an offer from Wyoming at the camp. Matt Rhule and the Husker staff followed with an offer the next morning.

He’s now the sixth defensive back recruit in the class of 2024.

HUSKER WOMEN’S HOOPS SETS LOADED HOME SCHEDULE:

The Nebraska women’s basketball team will face a loaded 2023-24 home schedule that will include eight games against 2023 NCAA Tournament teams. The Huskers announced their non-conference schedule on Thursday in conjunction with the unveiling of the conference home and road plays by the Big Ten.

Nebraska will open its 2023-24 regular season at Pinnacle Bank Arena against Northwestern State on Monday, Nov. 6. Nebraska also takes on Wyoming, Alcorn State, and Creighton in November.

Nebraska’s home Big Ten schedule will feature nearly all of the conference’s top teams from a year ago, including NCAA runner-up and Big Ten Tournament champion Iowa. The Huskers also will face Big Ten regular-season champion Indiana at Pinnacle Bank Arena, along with 2023 NCAA Elite Eight qualifier Maryland. NCAA Tournament qualifiers Michigan, Illinois and Purdue also make the journey to Lincoln this season, while Minnesota, Northwestern and Rutgers round out Nebraska’s home schedule.

NEBRASKA WRESTLING RELEASES NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE:

One of the premier wrestling tournaments and four home duals highlight Nebraska’s 2023-24 non-conference wrestling schedule announced on Thursday.

The Huskers will open the season on the road at North Dakota State on Saturday, Nov. 4.

NU wraps up the month of November hosting Campbell on Friday, Nov. 10 and traveling to the Navy Classic on Saturday, Nov. 18.

To kick off the month of December, NU will look to defend last year’s third-straight and fifth overall Cliff Keen Title in Las Vegas, Dec. 1-2. On Saturday, Dec. 16, the Big Red will return home to host South Dakota State for a rematch of last year’s dual at SDSU.

The Huskers will then begin the new year with a tri-meet at home against Wyoming and Northern Iowa on Saturday, Jan. 6. To close out the non-conference season, NU will hit the road again for a matchup with Pac-12 powerhouse Arizona State on Sunday, Feb. 25.

WEMBANYAMA SELECTED No. 1 IN NBA DRAFT:

Victor Wembanyama was the presumed No. 1 pick for months, the rare certainty in an NBA draft process that’s often a guessing game.

The San Antonio Spurs are confident he will be worth the wait.

Wembanyama comes with far more height and hype than most No. 1 picks. Listed at 7-foot-4, he dominated his French league in his final season there, leading all players in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots.

The Charlotte Hornets took Alabama freshman forward Brandon Miller with the No. 2 pick. Scoot Henderson of the G League Ignite, whose bling-filled jacket stood in sharp contrast to Wembanyama’s solid green look, was the No. 3 pick by the Portland Trail Blazers.

ALL-TIME CLASSIC CWS GAME LANDS LSU IN FINALS WITH LATE BLAST:

Tommy White hit Camden Minacci’s first pitch into the left-field seats to set up an All-SEC best-of-three finals matchup with Florida starting Saturday night. It will be a rematch of the 2017 final that the Gators won for their first national title.

LSU (52-16) became the first team to hand Wake Forest (54-12) consecutive losses. The Tigers had won 5-2 on Wednesday to set up a second bracket final.

Dylan Crews singled to left leading off the bottom of the 11th against Michael Massey (3-1), prompting Deacons coach Tom Walter to call on his star closer. Minacci’s first pitch to LSU’s home run leader was a 90 mph slider, and White sent it out for his 23rd homer of the year.
