UNK T&F’s FERGUSON QUALIFIES FOR SEMIFINALS AT USATF CHAMPIONSHIPS:
UNK Track & Field’s Wes Ferguson continues to impress in the 800 meter run.
Ferguson qualified for the USATF Championships in Eugene, Ore. this week after three separate national titles (two indoor, one outdoor) in the 800 meters over the past two years.
The Fremont native ran in the qualifying round Thursday afternoon, finishing third in his heat and sixth overall with a time of 1:46.65.
Ferguson now moves into Friday’s semifinals. The 800 meter run begins at 9:45 PM CST from Eugene.
TWO LOPER FOOTBALL PLAYERS EARN PRESEASON ACCOLADES:
The UNK Football team is already garnering some love from pre-season media outlets.
Loper Quarterback TJ Davis and offensive lineman Hunter Hays have been added to the Division II Preseason All-American team by the College Football Network.
Davis is listed as a utility player for the offensive roster. The four year starter was a Harlon Hill runner-up in 2021, accounting for over 90 touchdowns in his Kearney career.
Hays, a McCook native, earned first-team all conference honors last year from the MIAA.
UNK begins their first season out of the Josh Lynn era under new head coach Ryan Held on August 31 at Central Oklahoma.
BIG 12 MEDIA SELECTS TEXAS AS PRE-SEASON FAVORITE:
For the first time since the Conference went to a division-less format, Texas was picked atop the Conference’s 2023 preseason poll as voted on by media representatives. The Longhorns were slotted fourth in last year’s preseason poll behind Baylor, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
First-place votes were spread among six teams with Texas receiving 41 and a total of 886 points. The reigning Big 12 Champion, Kansas State, placed second with 14 and 858 points.
Oklahoma and Texas Tech each received four first-place votes with 758 and 729 points, respectively.
TCU, coming off appearances in the Big 12 Championship Game and CFP National Championship Game, rounded out the top five with three first-place votes and 727 points.
