BEARCATS FOOTBALL TAKES DOWN FREMONT FOR SECOND WIN:

The Kearney Bearcats handled business on the road in Week 2 at Fremont’s Heedum Field, winning 41-6 over the Tigers.

The Bearcats scored on two non-offensive touchdowns – including a punt block and an interception returned for a touchdown.

Kearney (2-0) awaits their home matchup with Lincoln North Star next Friday.

KEARNEY CATHOLIC HANDLES HERSHEY:

It was an onslaught from Hershey High, as the Kearney Catholic Stars defeated the Panthers on the road, 45-7.

The Stars, who led 31-0 at halftime, are now 2-0 and will gear up for a home contest against the Minden Whippets next week.

A full recap from Alex Hammeke can be found at KGFW and Central Nebraska Today.

UNK VOLLEYBALL BEGINS SALT LAKE TOURNEY UNBLEMISHED:

Outside hitters Emilee Lane and Asha Regier had career-high kill totals to help No. 16 Nebraska Kearney get past Oklahoma Christian (-24-26, -17, -19, -21) and Texas Woman’s University (-23, -17, -23) Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City, Utah.

This was “Opening Day” for Division II volleyball and the matches were part of the Westminster Invitational presented by UFirst Credit Union. UNK faces St. Martin’s (Wash.) and the host WC Griffins on Saturday.

LOPER CROSS COUNTRY COMES IN FIRST AT GRIFFON TWILIGHT:

The nationally-ranked Nebraska Kearney cross country teams both came in first at that inaugural Griffin Twilight Friday night in St. Joseph, Mo.

This was the opening weekend for Division II cross country. The Lopers will run again Sept. 16 at the annual Greeno/Dirksen Invitational in Lincoln.

On the women’s side, the 24th-ranked women saw Fremont junior Mara Hemmer lead the field of 45 by running an 18:16.49.

The No. 23 men tallied 27 points to also out distance the Bearcats (43). Host MWSU (68) was third in a six-team field that included No. 17 Washburn (125).

MORE CONFERENCE EXPANSION AS ACC GOES COAST-TO-COAST:

The Atlantic Coast Conference voted Friday to add Stanford, California and SMU next year, providing a landing spot for two more schools from the disintegrating Pac-12 and creating a fourth super conference in major college sports.

Starting in August 2024, the league with Tobacco Road roots in North Carolina will increase its number of football schools to 17 and 18 in most other sports, with Notre Dame remaining a football independent.

The ACC needed 12 of its 15 members to approve expansion, and the vote was not unanimous.

North Carolina and Florida State both voted no.

HUSKER FOOTBALL POSTGAME COMMENTS – MATT RHULE:

RHULE – DISAPPOINTING, BUT “NO CLOSE LOSSES”

Matt Rhule, Nebraska Football Head Coach, tried to turn out some positives to his team in his opening postgame media comments after Thursday night’s loss at Minnesota…

Nebraska had four turnovers in the contest – including two in the final three minutes.

RHULE – FIRST GAME CAN BECOME A LEARNING EXPERIENCE:

Nebraska Football dropped another one score game, and first year Husker Head Coach Matt Rhule stated at the postgame presser that this is just a building block for later success…

Nebraska has not won a season opener since 2019, and hits the road to Colorado next week.

RHULE – EVALUATION OF JEFF SIMS FIRST PERFORMANCE:

Nebraska Football not only trotted out a new head coach on Thursday, but also a new quarterback. Head Coach Matt Rhule gave his evaluation of Jeff Sims from his first day in the Scarlet and Cream…

Sims ended with three interceptions, but led the team in rushing yards and threw a touchdown pass for the Huskers lone touchdown of the contest.

RHULE – END OF GAME PREPARED TO PLAY FOR OVERTIME:

The Nebraska Football team broke their fans’ collective hearts on Thursday night, dropping another late contest in the fourth quarter in a conference game 13-10 at Minnesota. Matt Rhule was asked what the plan was heading into the final drive for the Huskers in the fourth quarter…

Rhule continued that late turnovers kept Nebraska from winning, but that his team continued to fight and played high level football keeping the contest within reach.

RHULE – HINDSIGHT IS 20/20 WITH GRANT FUMBLE:

Nebraska Football Head Coach Matt Rhule gave further explanation in his postgame comments regarding placing Anthony Grant in the contest prior to his fourth quarter fumble…

Nebraska had two fourth quarter turnovers that allowed Minnesota to tie, then take the lead in the final five minutes of the contest.

RHULE – ROBINSON EJECTION; DEFENSE EXPECTED OVERTIME:

Head Coach for Nebraska Football Matt Rhule gave his perspective on the Ty Robinson ejection from Nebraska’s team mentality, and had an evaluation of his defense’s role from Thursday night’s loss…

The Huskers out-rushed Minnesota but faltered late due to offensive turnovers giving Minnesota momentum and short field to tie and take the lead in the final stretch.
