GIBBON — The Gibbon Volunteer Fire Department responded to a Union Pacific locomotive that caught fire near the community during the evening of Monday, Nov. 27.

Around 6:30 p.m., a fire was reported on an unmanned locomotive located near the middle of a westbound Union Pacific (UP) train which was hauling empty coal cars, according to Robynn Tysver, UP Communications.

The train was stopped, and local authorities were notified about the fire. The Gibbon firefighters responded and extinguished the blaze.

No one was injured and the incident is under investigation.

“Union Pacific would like to extend its gratitude to the Gibbon Volunteer Fire Department for their help,” Tysver stated.
