ADAMS COUNTY — Adams Central Avenue at 42nd Street is closed in both directions after a vehicle became high-centered on a build up of snow and ice and was struck by a Union Pacific train on Saturday, Jan. 20.

The Adams County Road Department has closed the roadway in both directions, and it will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time until the rail crossing can safely be cleared of the snow build up.

On Saturday, a vehicle was attempting to cross the tracks when it became high-centered. Attempts were made to move the vehicle without success and Union Pacific Railroad was contracted with a request that train traffic be stopped, according to Adams County Emergency Management.

Unfortunately, a train still crossed the intersection and struck the vehicle before the train was able to be stopped. All the occupants were able to exit the vehicle before the impact and there were no injuries reported.

The vehicle was pushed some distance down the tracks before the train was able to come to a complete stop. The train was blocking the Adams Central and Osage crossings into the late afternoon on Saturday.

The Road Department advised to not use the minimum maintenance road on 26th St. due to the current road conditions.

It was noted the Adams Central Ave crossing will not be reopened until the ice build up clears from the crossing.

Drivers are asked to us an alternate north/south route and avoid Adams Central Ave until further notice.
