NEBRASKA – Seniors Myles Bach and Alex Goracke set new school-records Saturday at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln and the Fred Beile Classic in Crete. UNK spent two days at UNL with a small herd heading up the road to Doane on Saturday.Goracke (Giltner) broke a 23-year school-record in the weight throw Friday night at Nebraska (66-1-50) and then upped the ante on Saturday with a heave of 66-8.50 at Doane. The big effort, which now ranks sixth in Division II, came on his fourth attempt; Brett Wetton had held the Loper mark (66-1) in this event, set way back in Feb. 2001. Next, Bach (Cedar Rapids, Ia.) was runner up in the 3,000-meter run at the Husker Invite thanks to an 8:12.16. That bests the 8:12.96 Ben Arens turned in one year ago. Another mark almost fell as senior Wes Ferguson (Fremont) won the 800 in 1:47.32. The top time in D2 to date, that is just off his school-record of 1:47.16 which he at the NCAA Championships last March. In this same event, redshirt sophomore Landon Eckhardt had the program’s sixth best time (1:51.99) as well. Also cracking the UNK all-time top 10 was the 4×4 relay team and senior Micah Swedberg (Gothenburg) in the 600. Swedberg was third (1:20.45) with Fremont sophomore Tyson Baker fifth (1:21.13) in the 600 and then Swedberg was the second leg on the relay team (3:17.14). That group also consisted of junior Jack Drahota (Ravenna), sophomore Mitchell Deer (Sidney) and anchor Conner Wells (St. Paul). In the women’s 600 at Nebraska, sophomore Maeli Meier (Overton) and senior Hannah Harrison (Gothenburg) came in third and fourth, respectively. Meier’s time of 1:35.63 ranks third in school-history with Harrison right behind in fourth (1:35.71). These two also helped the 4×4 relay team turn in the program’s seventh fastest time (3:53.43). Senior Nicole Messbarger (Kearney) and junior Kyla Carlson (Aurora) also were on that squad. And moving up on the Top 10 was junior Jordan Soto-Stopak (Albion) in the 3,000 (10:11.48) and freshman Charis Robinson (Olathe, Kan.) in the mile (5:02.64). Joining Goracke in the winner’s circle at Doane was freshmen high jumpers Sydney Davis (Dannebrog) and Nolan Studley (Sidney). Davis cleared 5-7.75 to tie for fourth in school-history with Studley reaching 6-9.75. Besides his toss in the weight throw, Goracke also won the shot put (56-3.75). Finally, redshirt sophomore Lily Novacek was runner up in the weight throw (57-2), redshirt junior Gabrielle Oborny was second in the pole vault (11-4.50) and senior Brayden Sorensen was third in the high jump (6-11) at UNL. The Lopers head to Pittsburg State and Washburn next weekend.
