GRAND ISLAND — The Grand Island Police arrested a man, who had a revoked license due to several DUI convictions, for driving impaired during the evening of Thursday, May 30.
According to the Grand Island Police Department, at 7:22 p.m., officers observed a black Toyota Corolla eastbound on 6th St. near Clark St. North.
The Toyota was observed to be traveling at an estimated speed of 10 mph in a 25-mph posted speed limit zone for several blocks.
A record check of the vehicle’s plates showed they were registered to Gony Wakou. A further check indicated Wakou’s license was revoked for past driving under the influence convictions.
The prior DUI convictions occurred in November 2014 and April 2017
A traffic stop was conducted and Wakou quickly exited the vehicle and approached officers. Officers observed he had not been wearing a seatbelt prior to being stopped.
After confirming Wakou was the driver, he was placed under arrest.
While transporting Wakou, the odor of alcohol was noted coming from his person. A field sobriety test was conducted and Wakou showed, “gross impairment” and unfit to operate a motor vehicle.
Wakou would be arrested for driving under the influence – alcohol, third conviction, driving while revoked – felony and no seatbelt. He would be booked into the Hall County Department of Corrections.
