HASTINGS — A Heat Advisory is in place part of central Nebraska, including Hall and Adams counties and areas eastward. Heat index values will be in the triple digits.
According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, the Heat Advisory will go into effect from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The areas under the advisory are mainly from Highway 281 eastward, but the rest of the area will see high temperatures as well.
With heat index values up to 110 degrees, the hot temperatures and high humidity can quickly cause heat related illnesses for those who spend time outdoors. Winds will be light this afternoon and provide little relief from the heat.
“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” per NWS Hastings.
A cold front swinging through the region will bring a more organized chance for showers and thunderstorms this evening, with a Slight Risk, a two out of five, on the western and northern edge of the NWS Hastings warning area.
Modestly cooler air is expected behind the front, but this won’t be enough to knock temperatures below seasonal norms.
However, a stronger cold front will make its ways across the local area on Thursday during the daytime hours. This feature should bring the first significant relief from the high temperatures the area has been experiencing.
Highs might not break 80 degrees across the local area after Thursday and into the upcoming weekend.
“At the same time, more zonal flow aloft will be a bit more favorable for periodic thunderstorm chances, although models are not keying in on any significant disturbances to bring more widespread precipitation to the area,” NWS Hastings noted.
Chances for precipitation will be fairly sporadic after the two cold fronts move through the area.
