Kearney Catholic moves to 4-0 in Minden rout

By Alex Hammeke Sep 20, 2024 | 2:21 AM

It was a track meet at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium to start the Kearney Catholic/Minden football game. After the second quarter, Kearney Catholic found a way to stop Minden and prevailed to win 42-19 to move to 4-0 going into district play.

It was the perfect game for Stars coach Rashawn Harvey, who goes up against Amherst next week to open up the new era of Miles Field in the Battle of Buffalo County.

“They [Amherst] want nothing more than to ruin our opening of Stars Stadium,” Harvey said.

Playing their second game of the season at UNK, both teams opened up the game with quick drives. Pete Homan would open up the Stars scoring with a 49yd touchdown rush, while Orrin Kuehn would deliver the Minden response a little over two minutes later from 67 yards out.

Kearney Catholic would have another big play, with Jake Bosshammer sending a touchdown through the air to Owen Axmann. Kuehn would respond again for Minden to bring the Whippets within 2 points, down 14-12, but Kearney Catholic would get the last laugh in the first quarter with a Homan rush to the house.

The second quarter was subdued. Minden would turn the ball over on downs deep in Kearney Catholic territory, and the Stars were then forced to punt. After a missed 51yd field goal from Solomon Weins, Minden would score right as time expired to pull Minden within two points again, going into the locker room down 21-19.

Minden was not able to get any offensive momentum in the second half, as the second half was all Stars. Bosshammer would connect to Jake Geiser for a 90 yard strike, and would do the same a few minutes later with Atreyu May. Homan would add another rushing touchdown to close out the game.

Kearney Catholic will be at home next week for their homecoming match against Amherst to open up district play. Minden falls to 1-3 and will open up district play at home against the Holdrege Dusters.
