KEARNEY — A Red Flag Warning for critical fire weather conditions has been issues across central Nebraska, including the Tri-Cities, for Monday, Sept. 30.

According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, the warning is in effect from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Counties in the warning include Valley, Greely, Nance, Sherman, Howard, Merric, Dawson, Buffalo, Hall, Hamilton, Gosper, Phelps, Kearney, Adams, Furnas, Harlan and Franklin.

The warning has been issued due to the ongoing dry conditions, winds out of the north at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph and relative humidity as low as 15 percent.

“A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are expected. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior,” NWS Hastings stated.

Any fires that ignite will spread rapidly. Residents are asked to use caution if engaging in activities that may result in a fire.

Last week the Nebraska Forest Service issued a warning to agricultural producers who are harvesting to use caution when using hot equipment near tall and dry vegetation.
