GRAND ISLAND – The Grand Island Police Department is investigating a vehicle-pedestrian accident on U.S. Highway 281 at 7:38 p.m. Oct. 12.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes of Highway 281 just south of the Union Pacific overpass, north of the intersection of Stolley Park Road, according to a news release from Police Department Administrative Capt. Dean Elliott.

A red sport utility vehicle was traveling southbound in the left lane of U.S. Highway 281 and crested the overpass when the vehicle struck a pedestrian standing in the middle of the left-hand lane.

It is unknown why the pedestrian was walking in the middle of the traffic lane on a roadway with shoulders but no sidewalks or pedestrian walkways over the bridge.

The pedestrian was identified as Keith Hudgeons, 34, transient in the Grand Island area. He was transported to CHI St. Francis emergency room for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

An elderly couple from Lawrence were in the vehicle and were not injured, Elliott said. No citations were issued, he said.

The Grand Island Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident.
