Thousand-acre wildfire takes place near Loup City on Wednesday

LOUP CITY — Over 1,000 acres of pastureland burned near Loup City after wildfire broke out amid Red Flag Warning conditions on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

According to Dan Patterson, Sherman County Emergency Manager, the grass fire burned between 1,000 and 1,200 acres of pastureland.

The fire took place around seven miles west of Loup City and no structures were affected.

Patterson said 12 area fire departments responded to the scene and mostly had the fire contained by 6:30 a.m. He did note that Loup City firefighters remained on scene until 4:30 a.m. Thursday morning to watch for hot spots flaring up.

A Red Flag Warning had been issued on Wednesday due to critical fire weather conditions, including high winds out of the south, low relative humidity and extremely dry conditions.

A new Red Flag Warning had been issued for Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
