Northeast Principal Cathy Gundersen to retire at the end of school year

KEARNEY — Kearney Public Schools announces the retirement of Catherine Gundersen, the esteemed principal of Northeast Elementary School, effective at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. Gundersen, who has served as principal since 2009, leaves a legacy of dedication and excellence in education.

Reflecting on Gundersen’s tenure, Superintendent Jason Mundorf stated, “Mrs. Gundersen’s talent, leadership, and unwavering commitment to Northeast Elementary will be profoundly missed. Cathy was a fierce advocate and supporter of her students and staff and worked tirelessly to build a collaborative, supportive, and positive learning environment for all students. She has been a champion for Kearney Public Schools and Northeast and we will miss her!”

Gundersen remarked on her career, saying, “I went into education because I love working with kids and have a passion for helping children become successful citizens in our society. Seeing students grow and achieve their goals has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

Gundersen holds an undergraduate degree from Kearney State College, a Master’s Degree from Peru State College, and an administration certificate from Emporia State College. She and her husband, Gordon, have two daughters and four grandchildren, all bringing her endless pride and joy.
