KEARNEY — Kearney Public Schools is excited to announce Amber Taylor as the new principal of Northeast Elementary School, effective with the 2025-2026 school year, following the retirement of long-serving principal Catherine Gundersen.

Taylor, currently the assistant principal, has been a dedicated member of the Kearney educational community for over a decade.

“Amber Taylor is a passionate and skilled leader who has already made substantial contributions to our district through her roles as a teacher, a teacher-leader, MTSS Coordinator, and assistant principal,” stated KPS Superintendent Jason Mundorf. “Amber has been a fantastic support for Mrs. Gundersen and Northeast Elementary for the past two-plus years and we are excited to have her continue to expand their work and lead Northeast as their next principal. I am confident she will work hard to build on the school’s strong foundation as she leads Northeast into the future.”

Amber Taylor shared her excitement for the new role, stating, “I am incredibly honored to step into the role of principal at Northeast Elementary. Mrs. Gundersen has played an essential role in shaping me as an educator and a leader. I look forward to continuing the school’s legacy of fostering a positive and supportive learning environment, one that meets the academic and social-emotional needs of all students. Northeast is my home away from home, and I’m thrilled to lead our school community as we strive to inspire every student to be a lifelong learner.”

Taylor joined Kearney Public Schools in 2012, serving as an elementary teacher at Northeast and Meadowlark Elementary and later as the district MTSS (Multi-tiered System of Support) Coordinator. She has also been an adjunct lecturer at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. She holds a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, a Master’s in School Counseling from Doane College, and has a principal endorsement from the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

Amber Taylor is married to Steve and have three girls.
