At 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a two vehicle crash at Highway 14 and 16 Road, three miles North of Aurora.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2022 Kenworth semi tractor was southbound on Highway 14, when the vehicle’s brakes activated causing the vehicle to cross the center line.

The semi collided with a northbound 2019 Dodge pickup driven by Nathan Omel, 32, of Grand Island. Nathan Omel was killed as a result of the crash. The rear passenger Cynthia Omel, 66, also of Grand Island was also pronounced deceased at the scene.

The front seat passenger Marion Omel, 95 of Grand Island was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island, where he is currently hospitalized.

The driver of the semi, Terrance Callahan, 34, of Kearney was not injured. Seatbelts were in use in both vehicles.

The investigation is still ongoing at this time. Assistance at the scene was provided by Aurora Police Department, Aurora Fire and Ambulance, and the Nebraska State Patrol. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office expresses our condolences to the Omel family.
