Structure fire in Hastings determined to be accidental

HASTINGS — The cause of a structure fire that occurred in Hastings on Thursday, Dec. 12 in the house at 205 E. Fourth St. was determined to be accidental.

Hastings Fire & Rescue was dispatched at 7:31 p.m., and the fire was under control around 8:30 p.m. The occupants were evacuated.

The house was under construction, which hindered firefighting efforts. All utilities had been disconnected prior to the incident.

Hastings Rural Volunteer Fire Department provided mutual aid. Hastings Police Department, Hastings Utilities and the City of Hastings Street Department also responded to the incident.

No injuries were reported.

The cause has been determined to be accidental, and involved the use of a portable propane heater which ignited nearby combustibles. The house is a total loss.

There was some damage to property of one of the neighbors.
