HASTINGS — Please use caution while driving in west-central Hastings in the coming weeks as contractors access sewer lines by way of manholes in that area for extended periods of time.

The City of Hastings is working with the Johnson Service Company of Kearney to video the City’s entire sewer system and take a proactive approach to sewer maintenance.

Work in this current phase includes an area from Marian Road to Burlington Avenue and Second Street to Seventh Street.

Notifications are going out this week to residences in that area. The video work will take place after notification and could take up to a month.

For this city-wide sewer evaluation, the sewer system is divided into 20 subsystems. One subsystem is scheduled to be addressed each year.

The project prioritizes areas with the oldest sewer lines within the community, some of which are more than 100 years old.

The evaluation helps the City prioritize areas in need of repair and prevents sewer backups before they happen.

Phase I, in fall 2023, looked at an area in southwest Hastings, near Brickyard Park. Around 48,000 feet of sewer line was included in the video inspection with six locations totaling 1,800 feet of sewer line relined with steam-treated fiberglass pipe.

Phase II, in west-central Hastings, totals 51,500 feet of sewer line.
