HASTINGS — A large anhydrous ammonia leak took place east of Hastings during the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 18.
Around 1 p.m., Adams County Emergency Management alerted the public to an anhydrous leak that was taking place near Coaltrain Road and E. J. St. They noted the only evacuations are at the site itself and that the railroad was shut down in the area.
However, around 2:30 p.m. it was noted that the 4900 block of J St. and the businesses directly to the east of the 3500 block had been evacuated as a precaution.
“For precaution Heartland Renewables has been recommended to evacuate. Not ordered, there is an odor in that area. There is no risk to Central Community College at this time. The air is clear at that point. Also, clear north of Highway 6,” Adams County Emergency Management posted at 3:20 p.m.
By 4:05 p.m., it was noted that the anhydrous leak had not been contained and residents were advised to seek shelter indoors and leave an area if they smelled any abnormal odors.
At 5:47 p.m. it was reported that the leak had been stopped and that there may be some residual odor in the air.
It was reported that there was one injury, due to exposure of an employee at the site.
“Great work by Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Hastings Rural Fire, Hastings Hazmat, Glenvil Fire, Salvation Army, State Fire Marshals,” Adams County Emergency Management stated.
