KEARNEY — Kearney Public Schools is proud to announce that Nathan LeFeber, Band Director at Kearney High School, has been selected as the 2025 recipient of the Nate Metschke Outstanding Mid-Career Director Award, one of Nebraska’s most meaningful honors in music education.
Established in 2019, the award celebrates the life and legacy of Nate Metschke, a widely admired Nebraska band director known for his creativity, joyful spirit, and infectious positivity.
Metschke passed away from cancer at the age of 40, leaving behind an enduring impact on countless students, colleagues, and school communities. The award named in his honor recognizes music educators who embody these same qualities through their work.
LeFeber was chosen for his exceptional creativity, commitment to student growth, and the vibrant culture he has cultivated within the Kearney High School band program. His leadership exemplifies originality, imagination, and excellence—hallmarks of the Nate Metschke Award.
To be eligible, candidates must:
• Possess at least eight years of teaching experience
• Serve as a band director in Nebraska
• Be an active NSBA member
• Demonstrate outstanding creativity, instructional excellence, and positive influence
Nominations for the award may come from administrators, colleagues, students, community organizations, or others who have witnessed the nominee’s professional impact.
“Nathan is an inspiring educator whose creativity and enthusiasm elevate every ensemble he leads,” said Jeff Ganz, KHS Principal. “His passion for music and students shines through in every rehearsal and performance. This recognition is a testament to his tremendous dedication and talent.”
