KEARNEY — Kearney Public Schools is pleased to announce that Sarah Hawthorne will transition to a full-time Assistant Principal at Kenwood Elementary School beginning in January.

Hawthorne currently serves as a half-time principal at both Bryant Elementary and Emerson Elementary, roles in which she has provided strong leadership, steady support, and a student-centered approach.

This transition comes as Kenwood Elementary—currently the largest elementary school in Kearney—continues to experience growing enrollment and increasing demands on administrative support. Expanding Hawthorne’s role ensures that the school has the dedicated leadership it needs to best serve students, staff, and families.

To maintain strong support at Bryant and Emerson, KPS will fill Hawthorne’s previous responsibilities with full-time In-School Suspension (ISS) Coordinators at each school. Both buildings currently operate with half-time ISS coordinators; the expansion to full-time positions will provide more consistent behavioral and academic support for students throughout the school day.

Superintendent Jason Mundorf expressed confidence in the transition, sharing:

“Sarah is a terrific leader and Assistant Principal whose experience and student-first mindset will be a tremendous asset to Kenwood Elementary. At the same time, this staffing shift strengthens Bryant and Emerson by adding full-time support at each building in areas of student and staff support. This is a strategic move that benefits students across all three buildings.”

Kearney Public Schools looks forward to Hawthorne’s continued leadership and the positive impact these staffing enhancements will have across the district.
