LEXINGTON — Dawson Public Power District takes pride in our commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and affordable electricity.

Fulfilling this promise requires online investment in our infrastructure, ensuring that our electric distribution system remains strong and dependable for decades to come. For 2026, we have budgeted approximately $8 million for essential system improvements.

This year’s plan covers fewer miles of power lines than in the past, but it focuses on high-impact projects—like replacing substation transformers and addressing critical “red tag” poles—which are vital for system integrity and safety. Our annual investment is designed to provide you with a stronger, more resilient electric service.

Here is a look at the three main categories of work we have planned for 2026 and what they mean for you:

Aging Infrastructure Upgrades: We are focusing on replacing older power lines that have been in service for 30 years or more. This is key to boosting the reliability and safety of your electric service. A part of this work involves replacing poles—those that no longer meet our standards. By proactively addressing aging parts, we aim to significantly reduce the number and length of power outages you experience, keeping your lights on and your life running smoothly.

Substations & Transmission Lines: This investment is all about making sure our system can handle future growth and deliver a robust and steady power supply. We will be replacing a few large substation transformers. These are high-cost items, but they are absolutely necessary to ensure the power delivered to you and your neighbors remains safe, reliable, and affordable now and as demand increases.

Distribution Line Upgrades: We are implementing specific upgrades to our local distribution lines, which will directly improve the quality and reliability of your day-to-day service. Many of these projects are part of a multi-year plan, broken down into smaller, more manageable steps.

By scheduling these major upgrades outside the busy irrigation season, we minimize disruption to our local agricultural operations and ensure reliable power when you need it most.

With an $8 million investment in substations, transmission, and distribution upgrades, we are modernizing the electrical grid to ensure safe, reliable, and affordable service for all DPPD customers in 2026 and beyond.
