KEARNEY — A High Wind Watch has been issued for parts of central Nebraska for the morning and afternoon hours of Friday, Jan. 16.

According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, the watch will be in effect Friday morning through the afternoon for Greeley, Howard, Sherman, Valley, Buffalo, Dawson, Furnas, Gosper, and Phelps counties.

An upper-level trough of low pressure will force a strong cold front through the region, contributing the the increase in winds.

Winds are expected from the northwest at 35 to 40 mph with some localized gusts up to 60 mph possible.

“Damaging winds could damage trees. Localized power outages are possible. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles,” per NWS Hastings, “Light snow showers, combined with the winds, may cause localized visibility reductions and additional travel issues on Friday.”

Friday night thorough Saturday night remain cold and breezy, and wind chills could dip well below zero in some areas both nights.
