High Wind Warning issued for Friday, Jan. 16, (NWS Hastings, Courtesy)

HASTINGS — A High Wind and Red Flag Warning have been issued for parts of central Nebraska for Friday, Jan. 16.

The National Weather Service – Hastings has issued a High Wind Warning that is in effect until 6 p.m. It now includes the Tri-Cities and areas north, west and south.

Northwest winds are expected to be sustained at 30-40 mph with gusts up to 50-60 mph.

“Strong winds could damage trees and power lines. Localized power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles,” per NWS Hastings, “Isolated to scattered snow showers combined are possible today. Snow falling combined with gusty winds could result in brief but significant visibility reductions, along with slick spots on roads.

In addition, a Red Flag Warning for critical fire weather conditions has been issued for Dawson, Gosper, Phelps, Furnas and Harlan counties in Nebraska from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The highs winds, combined with relative humidity as low at 25 to 30 percent will contribute to the fire weather.

“A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior,” per NWS Hastings.
