HASTINGS — A Red Flag Warning has been issued for parts of north central Nebraska due to concerns over critical fire weather concerns.

According to the National Weather Service – Hastings and North Platte, a Red Flag Warning has been issued for Valley, Greeley, Sherman, Howard and Custer counties from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 9.

“A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior,” per NWS Hastings.

The warning has been issued due to stronger winds from the west-southwest sustained around 15 mph and gusting to around 25 mph. Relative humidity is expected to drop as low as 15 percent and daytime highs are expected to reach the 70s for much of the region.

Widespread near-critical fire weather conditions are in place across all of central Nebraska, but the Red Flag Warning has been issued for the areas with the highest potential.

“Any fire that develops will spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended,” per NWS Hastings.
