Six runs in the first inning and three in the third by Stanford were too much for the Nebraska baseball team to overcome, as the Cardinal defeated the Cornhuskers, 11-6, Monday in Scottsdale, Ariz., in the MLB Desert Invitational. The loss dropped Nebraska to 3-1, stopping its longest winning streak to start a season since 2005.

Trailing 9-0 as they came to the plate in the bottom of the third, the Huskers began to chip away. Cole Kitchens hit a two-run double to right-center to get NU on the board. Will Jesske followed with a two-run homer to left, cutting the deficit to 9-4. Then in the fifth, Drew Grego scored on a wild pitch. Jeter Worthley then drove in a run with a ground out, cutting Stanford’s advantage to 9-6. The game stayed there until the top of the eighth, when the Cardinal pushed across two runs, opening an 11-6 lead.

Colin Nowaczyk (0-1) took the loss. In one inning, he allowed six earned runs and five hits. Mac Moyer led the Nebraska offense, hitting 4-for-4 with two doubles. Joshua Overbeek and Carey both had two hits for NU. Charlie Bates led the Stanford lineup, hitting 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. JJ Moran was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles.

The Huskers are back in action Friday in Arlington, Texas, as Nebraska takes on No. 15 Louisville. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning at 2:30 p.m. on KLIN.
