United States flag at half-staff, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

KEARNEY — Governor Jim Pillen has delegated Kearney Mayor Jonathan Nikkila the authority to order all U.S. and State of Nebraska flags at City of Kearney facilities to be flown at half-staff on Saturday, February 21, in honor of Michael Yanney.

Yanney, who was born and raised in Kearney, passed away on Feb. 14 at the age of 92.

He was a respected business and civic leader whose influence was felt across Nebraska and beyond.

As founder of Burlington Capital, Yanney built a legacy of leadership, philanthropy, and community investment. He and his wife, Gail, were generous supporters of numerous programs, projects, and community initiatives throughout the state, including in his hometown of Kearney.

Most notably, Mike Yanney was the visionary and philanthropic architect of the public-private partnership that is Yanney Heritage Park. Yanney Heritage Park is an amazing gem in our community that leaves a legacy for generations to enjoy.

“Mike Yanney represented the very best of Kearney,” said Mayor Jonathan Nikkila. “He never forgot where he came from, and his commitment to strengthening communities across Nebraska leaves a lasting legacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Yanney family.”

The flag order will be effective on February 21, the day of Yanney’s interment.
