KEARNEY — Michael “Mike” Morgan, former City Manager of Kearney and a nearly four-decade veteran of public service, today announced his candidacy for Buffalo County Commissioner in District 5.
Morgan brings extensive experience in public administration, infrastructure planning, fiscal stewardship, and community development to the race.
Morgan served as Kearney’s City Manager from 2005 to 2024, where he oversaw city operations, managed public resources, and helped guide a period of sustained growth and investment in community facilities and infrastructure. His career in local government spans nearly 40 years, including leadership roles in multiple municipalities across the Midwest.
“I am running for Buffalo County Commissioner to continue serving the community and area that has given me so much,” Morgan said. “Buffalo County is well-positioned for the future, but continued success requires thoughtful planning, responsible financial management, and a commitment to maintaining the quality of life our residents expect. I believe my experience will enhance Buffalo County’s ability to advance toward excellence while improving efficiency and delivering more responsive, effective service to its residents.”
During his tenure in Kearney, Morgan worked closely with elected officials, regional partners, and community stakeholders to advance initiatives supporting economic development, public services, and long-term infrastructure needs. His approach emphasized collaboration, transparency, solution based services and careful management of taxpayer resources.
“As County Commissioner, I will focus on maintaining fiscal discipline, supporting infrastructure and public safety, and ensuring county government operates efficiently and effectively,” Morgan said. “I look forward to listening to residents and working alongside fellow commissioners to serve the best interests of Buffalo County.”
Morgan and his wife, Jill, along with their daughters, Katie (Nick) Autry and Kelsey (Jason) Janssen, and their grandchildren, are proud residents of Buffalo County, where he remains deeply committed to serving the community.
Additional information about Morgan’s campaign will be announced in the coming weeks.
