America 250 Time Capsule, (Trails and Rails Museum, Courtesy)

KEARNEY — In honor of the United States’ 250th anniversary, the Buffalo County Historical Society is launching an America 250: Buffalo County Celebration Time Capsule, inviting residents, families, and organizations to help preserve a snapshot of life today for future generations.

The time capsule will be housed at the Trails & Rails Museum and will be sealed and preserved using archival best practices. Unlike many capsules, it will remain above ground and may be placed on public display at select times. The capsule is scheduled to be reopened in 2076, allowing future Buffalo County residents to experience what life was like in 2026.

Community members are encouraged to donate small, meaningful items such as letters, photographs, newspaper clippings, and compact objects that reflect daily life or local significance. For safety and preservation reasons, large items, electronics with batteries, liquids, and other hazardous materials will not be accepted.

Donations may be dropped off or mailed to the Buffalo County Historical Society/Trails & Rails Museum at 710 W. 11th Street, Kearney, or PO Box 523, Kearney, NE 68848. Items will be accepted now through Aug. 2, 2026, with all contributions received by 4:00 p.m. that day included as space allows. The final day of collection coincides with the museum’s annual Wagons West Celebration.

All donated items will be inventoried, and contributors may choose to be listed by name or remain anonymous in the public inventory.
For questions or additional information, contact Lina Cordia, Curator, at lcordia@bchs.us, call (308) 234-3041, or visit the museum during open hours.
