HASTINGS — A Red Flag Warning has been issued for north central Nebraska and counties along the Nebraska-Kansas border for Thursday, March 26.
According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, the Red Flag Warning has been issued for several Nebraska counties including Franklin, Webster, Nuckolls and Thayer.
To the west the National Weather Service – North Platte has issued the same warning for Custer and Frontier counties, along with more counties in northern Nebraska, reaching all the way to the South Dakota border.
The warning is in effect from 8 p.m. to 8 p.m. and has been issued for winds out of the north-northeast at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Relative humidity in the region will be as low as 20 percent.
A Hazardous Weather Outlook has been issued for the Tri-Cities and surrounding counties.
Per NWS Hastings, “A strong cold front will move through the area today, with northerly winds gusting to around 40-45 mph behind the front. These winds, combined with warm and dry conditions ahead of the front will result in near critical to critical fire weather conditions across the outlook area.”
“The highest overall fire threat is along and southeast of a line roughly from Phillipsburg, Kan., to Hebron where a Red Flag Warning is in effect,” per NWS Hastings.
It was noted that a faster passage of the cold front may result in relative humidity remaining above 20 percent, but the winds are expected to be strong and will be a concern if any fires develop.
