For the third time this season junior lefty Cade Povich has been named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week. Povich improved to 6-1 on the year with a 1-0 victory over Michigan last Friday. A first-team All-Big Ten selection, Povich matched his career high by going 7.0 innings, he allowed only four hits and struck out nine. The Huskers earned five weekly awards during the 2021 season.

The Nebraska baseball team opens postseason play Friday night at 7:00 at the Fayetteville NCAA Regional in Arkansas. The No. 2 seed, the Huskers will face the 3rd seed Northeastern in the opening round of the four-team, double-elimination regional. Friday’s other contest features the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed, Arkansas, taking on the No. 4 seed the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders at 2:00.

The Fayetteville Regional is the only one of the 16 regional sites to be completely made up of automatic qualifiers. Arkansas (SEC), Northeastern (CAA) and New Jersey Tech (America East) all won their conference tournaments, while the Huskers won the Big Ten regular-season title and earned the league’s automatic bid because there was no Big Ten Tournament this season.

In Husker football related news:
– Walk-on running back Jaquez Yant has earned a scholarship after his breakout spring.
– Lincoln Southeast athlete Jake Appleget has received a Husker offer after going through a workout Tuesday.
– Daniel Kaelin, sophomore-to-be quarterback at Bellevue West, has received a Nebraska offer for 2024.
– Former Husker Rex Burkhead has reportedly signed with the Houston Texans.

Kearney is hosting the 63rd annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl this Saturday night. The South roster includes Kearney High’s Gabe VanWinkle and Jack Johnson, and Kearney Catholic’s Cale Conrad and Logan O’Brien. Kickoff is at 6:00 at UNK’s Ron and Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.
