KGFW Sports – NU Camps, Legion Baseball and More

Jun 3, 2021 | 5:43 AM

Fans will be able to attend four Husker recruiting camps in Memorial Stadium this month. Both Friday Night Lights events (June 4th and 18th), the 7-on-7 camp (June 13th) and the Adidas Pipeline OL/DL camp (June 19th) will be open to the public and free to attend. These camps attract many of the Husker’s top national and in-state recruiting targets. Both Friday Night Light events will take place from approximately 6:00-8:00 p.m. (gates open at 5:00). The 7-on-7 camp will begin with pool play at approximately 9:30 a.m (gates open at 9:00). The Pipeline camp will run from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. (gates open at 10:30). All seating for the camps will be limited to West Stadium in sections 21-31, and fans will not be allowed on the field at any time. The concourse will not be accessible and concession stands will not be open, though fans are allowed to bring limited food and non-alcoholic beverages. Restrooms will be available. The Clear Bag Policy will also be in effect.

Former Husker offensive lineman Zach Wiegert is on the 2022 College Football Hall of Fame ballot. The Fremont native earned 1st-Team All-American honors, won the Outland Trophy and received one Heisman vote following the Huskers’ 1994 National Championship season. His Number 72 jersey was retired before the 1995 season. His 12 year NFL career included stints with the St. Louis Rams, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Houston Texans. This is his 7th hall of fame ballot appearance. Former UNK coach Allen Zikmund is also on this year’s ballot. The announcement of the 2022 College Football Hall of Fame Class will be made in early 2022.

The Nebraska baseball team opens postseason play Friday night at 7:00 at the Fayetteville NCAA Regional in Arkansas. The No. 2 seed, the Huskers will face the 3rd seed Northeastern in the opening round of the four-team, double-elimination regional. Friday’s other contest features the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed, Arkansas, taking on the No. 4 seed the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders at 2:00.

The Fayetteville Regional is the only one of the 16 regional sites to be completely made up of automatic qualifiers. Arkansas (SEC), Northeastern (CAA) and New Jersey Tech (America East) all won their conference tournaments, while the Huskers won the Big Ten regular-season title and earned the league’s automatic bid because there was no Big Ten Tournament this season.

Kearney is hosting the 63rd annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl this Saturday night. The South roster includes Kearney High’s Gabe VanWinkle and Jack Johnson, and Kearney Catholic’s Cale Conrad and Logan O’Brien. Kickoff is at 6:00 at UNK’s Ron and Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

Wave I of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials will begin Friday at the CHI Health Center in Omaha. The four day event begins each day at 10:00 a.m. (CT) with the preliminary rounds. The Finals will be held each evening at 7:00 p.m. (CT).

The U.S. Women’s National Team improved to 6-0 at the Federation of International Volleyball Nations League Wednesday, sweeping Thailand, 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-16). The team’s roster features three former Huskers: Jordan Larson, Kelsey Robinson and Justine Wong-Orantes. The U.S. Women are now off until a Sunday matchup with Germany.

The Creighton men’s basketball team landed their fifth commitment in the 2021 class with four-star guard Trey Alexander. A former Auburn commit, the 6-foot-3 combo guard out of Oklahoma chose the Bluejays over the Panthers of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is the 73rd best overall prospect in the nation according to the industry-generated 2021 247Sports Composite Rankings.

In other Creighton men’s basketball news:
– Antwann Jones, who spent two seasons at Creighton after transferring in from Memphis, has entered the transfer portal.
