In an interview with VolleyballMag.com, Husker head coach John Cook said Lauren Stivrins will be returning for a “super senior” season. Cook also confirmed that Stivrins played injured this past spring. While she is returning, it’s still not yet clear if she’ll be able to play. Cook noted it’s all dependent on her back, adding that she’ll try if she’s able. The 6-foot-4 middle blocker posted the best season of her career this spring, averaging 3.18 kills and 1.03 blocks per set while hitting .468, tops in the Big Ten and second best all-time in program history. She was named an All-Big Ten First Team performer and an AVCA First-Team All-American.
The Nebraska men’s basketball team will host Colorado this fall to raise money for a trio of non-profit charities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The charity exhibition game will take place at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln on Sunday, Oct. 31st, at Noon (central). This is the first meeting between the two programs since March 5th, 2011. That matchup was the final regular-season Big 12 game for both schools’; the Huskers moved to the Big Ten Conference and the Buffaloes went to the Pac-12 Conference. Proceeds from the contest will go to three local organizations: the TeamMates mentoring program; the YWCA of Lincoln for its Employ402 program and the Nebraska Greats Foundation.
Nebraska will face a first-time opponent in the 2021 Big Ten/ACC Men’s Basketball Challenge. The Huskers will travel to PNC Arena in Raleigh to take on North Carolina State on Wednesday, Dec. 1st. The start time and television information will be announced at a later date. Nebraska is 5-5 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, including a 3-2 mark in road games.
Nebraska’s Spencer Schwellenbach was named a first-team All-American by D1Baseball.com Monday. It’s the second first-team selection for Schwellenbach, who was named a First-Team ABCA/Rawlings All-American earlier this month. Schwellenbach is the first Husker to earn first-team All-America honors since National Player of the Year Alex Gordon in 2005. The 2021 Big Ten Player of the Year and Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year, Schwellenbach was the only Big Ten player selected by the publication.
