Two Huskers were selected during day two of the MLB Draft.
Big Ten Player of the Year Spencer Schwellenbach was taken by the Atlanta Braves with the 59th overall pick in the second round. Tabbed an All-American by five different publications, including a first-team pick by D1Baseball and ABCA/Rawlings, Schwellenbach was named the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year after hitting .284 with six homers and 40 RBIs at shortstop, while also going 3-1 on the hill with 10 saves and a 0.57 ERA in 31.2 innings of work.
Junior Cade Povich was the second Husker taken in the Draft, as he was picked by the Minnesota Twins in the third round with the 98th overall pick. A 2021 first-team All-Big Ten selection, Povich anchored Nebraska’s rotation this season, posting a 6-1 record and a 3.11 ERA over 15 starts, with 88 strikeouts to 22 walks.
Since 2015, the Huskers have had five players taken in the first 10 rounds of the Draft. Povich and Schwellenbach are the first Husker teammates to be taken in the first three rounds of the MLB Draft since 2005 when Alex Gordon was the No. 2 overall pick by Kansas City and Brian Duensing was selected in the third round by Minnesota.
Max Anderson earned his third freshman All-America honor on Monday, as he was named a second-team freshman All-American by D1Baseball. The 2021 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Anderson was previously named a second-team freshman All-American by Perfect Game/Rawlings and a freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Anderson was the only freshman from the Big Ten honored by D1Baseball on Monday.
Lexi Sun was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team Monday. A two-time academic all-district selection, Sun is the 24th Husker volleyball student-athlete to earn Academic All-America recognition. Sun has announced that she will return to Nebraska for a fifth season this fall.
