– In other College football news: The commissioners of the Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences met yesterday to discuss the viability of a strategic partnership between the conferences. In an appearance before the Texas Senate yesterday, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby raised the possibility of the Big 12 partnering or merging with another conference. At Pac-12 media day last week, Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff said he wouldn’t rule on a scheduling alliance with another conference or expansion.
The Nebraska women’s basketball team will face Wake Forest for the first time in school history, when they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to battle the Demon Deacons in the 2021 Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Wednesday, Dec. 1st. Wake Forest was one of eight ACC teams to claim a bid to the 2020 NCAA Tournament, despite finishing with a 12-13 overall record that included an 8-10 mark in the ACC. Nebraska earned a trip to the Postseason WNIT last season, advancing to the round of 16 on their way to a 13-13 overall record that included a 9-10 mark in the Big Ten.
The 12-player roster for the Federation of International Volleyball U18 World Championships in Mexico features four future Huskers. The USA team includes Bekka Allick (Waverly, Nebraska), Caroline Jurevicius (Gates Mills, Ohio), Harper Murray (Ann Arbor, Michigan) and Bergen Reilly (Sioux Falls, South Dakota). The U.S. is the defending champion after winning gold for the first time in 2019. That team included current Huskers Lexi Rodriguez, Kennedi Orr and Lindsay Krause. The 20-team competition begins in late September.
A law firm hired to investigate gender equity concerns at NCAA championship events Tuesday recommended holding the men’s and women’s Final Fours at the same site and offering financial incentives to schools to improve their women’s basketball programs. The review began in March after the NCAA failed to provide similar amenities to the teams in the men’s and women’s Division I basketball tournaments. The law firm is recommending annual assessments by the NCAA over the next five years to track progress on gender equity.
The Tri-City Storm acquired forward Jeremy Wilmer and a 3rd Round Draft pick in the 2023 USHL Phase II Draft from the Waterloo Black Hawks yesterday. In exchange, the Storm gave up four draft picks; a 1st Round pick in the 2022 USHL Phase II Draft, a 2nd Round pick in the 2022 USHL Phase I Draft, a 3rd Round pick in the 2022 USHL Phase I Draft, and a 1st Round pick in the 2023 USHL Phase II Draft.
