12 Husker defenders received a coveted Black Shirt Monday. The 12 Honorees are Damion Daniels, Ben Stille, Ty Robinson, Deontre Thomas, JoJo Domann, Nick Henrich, Luke Reimer, Garrett Nelson, Caleb Tannor, Marquel Dismuke, Deontai Williams and Cam Taylor-Britt. The Huskers open the season this Saturday at Illinois, kickoff is at noon.

Husker seniors Nicklin Hames and Lexi Sun were voted to the 2021 Preseason All-Big Ten Team by the league’s 14 head coaches Monday. Sun is a two-time All-American and two-time All-Big Ten honoree heading into her fifth year of eligibility. Hames picked up second-team All-America recognition and her second straight All-Big Ten award in 2020-21.

Defending Big Ten champion Wisconsin was the unanimous choice by the coaches as the top team in the Big Ten Preseason Poll. Nebraska, Penn State, Minnesota and Purdue rounded out the top five teams. The Huskers are hosting their own invite this weekend. They face Tulsa Friday morning at 11:00, and Colgate at 6:30. They take on former Big 12 foe Kansas State Saturday at 4:00.

– An alliance involving the Big Ten, Pac-12 and ACC is expected to be announced today.
– A new Big Ten policy, If a team can’t play because of COVID-19, it will forfeit the game.

The UNK volleyball team is ranked fourth in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) preseason Division II Top 25 poll. The Lopers received 908 points and one first place vote and are one of 11 Central Region squads in the Top 25. The others are Concordia St. Paul (2nd), Minnesota-Duluth (7th), Washburn (8th), Oklahoma Baptist (9th), Northern State (15th), Northwest Missouri (16th), Central Missouri (17th), Harding, Ark. (18th), St. Cloud State (19th) and Wayne State (24th). Angelo State of Texas is preseason No. 1.

The Lopers are also picked to finish first in the 2021 MIAA preseason coaches’ poll. Head coaches vote on the makeup of the poll and cannot vote for their own team. UNK, which has won or shared the past four MIAA regular season titles as well as winning the “unofficial” MIAA Spring Invitational this past April, received 96 points and seven first place votes. Washburn (88; two first place) and Northwest Missouri State (86; two first place) are close behind. Rounding out the top five is Central Missouri (75) and Central Oklahoma (62), two more recent mainstays in the AVCA Top 25 poll. The Lopers begin the regular season on Friday, Sept. 3th, at the Molloy College Invitational just outside of New York City.
