UNK FOOTBALL SEES WINNING STREAK COME TO AN END AGAINST HAYS RALLY

The Fort Hays State Tigers scored touchdowns on all six second half possessions to erase three different 21-point deficits and beat No. 12 Nebraska-Kearney, 42-35, Saturday night at Lewis Field Stadium in Kansas.

UNK, now 4-1, suffered its first defeat in 686 days.

UNK hosts Missouri Western State on “Homecoming” next Saturday. The Griffons (2-3) fell to No. 2 Northwest Missouri State 30-7.

UNK VOLLEYBALL HAS MIXED WEEKEND

13th-ranked Northwest Missouri State beat 10th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney in four sets Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.

This marks Kearney’s first losing streak since 2015; they were coming off a four-set loss at Central Oklahoma last Saturday.

Saturday afternoon, the Lopers returned with Sophomore outside Emersen Cyza having a team-high 12 kills and served up three aces at the end of the second set to help No. 10 Nebraska-Kearney sweep Missouri Western State at the Health & Sports Center.

UNK heads to Fort Hays State Tuesday night.

FROST – STILL WORK TO BE DONE

Head Coach of the Huskers Scott Frost was pleased to see his team win big over Northwestern 56-7 on Saturday, but admitted that there is still plenty left to improve upon…

The Huskers look to play the upset this weekend as the Top Ten rated Michigan Wolverines come to Lincoln.

FROST – YANT EARNED BACK PLAYING TIME

One of the biggest surprises of the Northwestern contest for the Huskers was the success of walk-on freshman Jaquez Yant. 

Head Coach Scott Frost added in his post game press conference that Yant had earned his spot back after a disappointing start to fall camp…

Frost added that Yant is expected to continue to generate more carries in upcoming contests for the Big Red.

FROST – GOOD START FOR YOUNG STARTERS

A notable change on the offensive line for the start of the Northwestern contest was the placement of true freshman left tackle Teddy Prochazka.

Frost added he liked what he saw from his young starter, but warned of what too much praise may do…

Prochazka has seen action in all contests so far, and will burn his redshirt status for more action throughout the season.

MARTINEZ – NOTHING LIKE NIGHT GAMES AT MEMORIAL STADIUM

Adrian Martinez lit up the scoreboard on Saturday against Northwestern, and was asked about what the experience was like under the lights in Memorial Stadium…

Martinez and the Huskers will look to put up more fireworks this Saturday against a Top Ten Michigan team. 

MARTINEZ – GOOD TO GET PAST NORTHWESTERN

The storyline of one possession contests for the Nebraska/Northwestern matchups did not come to fruition on Saturday as the Huskers dominated, winning 56-7. 

Quarterback Adrian Martinez added that it was great to get over the Wildcats hump…

Martinez finished with over 200 yards passing with a touchdown toss and three scores on the ground.

MARTINEZ – YANT’S BIG DAY WAS TO BE EXPECTED

Quarterback Adrian Martinez did not have to do it himself on Saturday, as freshman walk-on Jaquez Yant showed up and showed out with huge gains on numerous carries. 

Martinez added that this type of performance was to be expected of Yant in his practice habits…

The other Husker backs also had notable carries including Ramir Johnson, Sevion Morrison, and Markese Stepp.

MARTINEZ – MARTIN’S RETURN GOOD FOR HUSKER OFFENSE

The Huskers offense saw a huge boost in big plays against Northwestern, and quarterback Adrian Martinez believes that the added confidence was due to the return of Oliver Martin…

Martin has been mentioned as one of Martinez’ favorite and most trusted targets. The receiver and punt returner had missed the prior 4 weeks due to an injury suffered against Illinois. 

HUSKER VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS WOLVERINES, SPARTANS TO COMPLETE WEEKEND

The No. 12 Nebraska volleyball team collected its third straight sweep in conference play Sunday afternoon, defeating Michigan State 3-0. Now on a four-match win streak, the Huskers improve to 10-3 (4-0 Big Ten).

Meanwhile, it all came together Friday night as the Huskers cruised to a sweep of Michigan, 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-13) at the Devaney Center.

Lauren Stivrins was strong in her return to the court, finishing with a match-high 11 kills on 15 errorless swings against the Wolverines.

Nebraska hits the road to face No. 14 Penn State on Friday. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at Rec Hall in University Park, Pa. The match will be televised on BTN and on the Husker Radio Network on KGFW. 

HASTINGS COLLEGE LAST SECOND FIELD GOAL EARNS FIRST WIN

The Hastings College Broncos were able to get into position as Jason Bachle hit a 47 yard field goal with 1:58 to go as Hastings defeated Briar Cliff 24-23 on Saturday afternoon.

Hastings is now 1-4 on the year and will be back in action Saturday Oct. 9 as No. 3 Morningside comes to Hastings with kickoff set for 1:00 pm on Lloyd Wilson Field.

TRI-CITY STORM SCORE FOUR UNANSWERED TO DOWN LINCOLN

The Tri-City Storm netted four unanswered goals in Friday’s road game against the Lincoln Stars to post a 4-1 victory. Mitchell Miller, Graham Gamache, Gavin Brindley, and Jeremy Wilmer all scored goals for Tri-City in the win.

The Storm hit the ice again on Friday, Oct. 8 in a home game against the Waterloo Black Hawks. Puck drop for the game is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

HUSKER SOFTBALL SPLITS WEEKEND

The Nebraska softball team split a doubleheader Sunday afternoon against Missouri at Bowlin Stadium. The Huskers won the first game 6-1, before falling to the Tigers 3-0 in the second game. 

The Huskers are back in action Saturday, Oct. 16 at Bowlin Stadium against South Dakota at 10 a.m. for Nebraska’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness game. Attendance for the game is free.

UNK SOCCER DOWNS NEWMAN, FALL TO BRONCHOS

Regionally-ranked Central Oklahoma downed Nebraska-Kearney, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

Freshman Angelina Iocca headed in a corner taken by redshirt sophomore Cammie Davis in the 101st minute to lift Nebraska-Kearney to a 2-1 win over Newman Friday night at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

The still short-handed Lopers earned its first MIAA win over 2021 and avenged two spring setbacks to the Jets

UNK hosts Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western State next weekend.

HUSKER HELPS AUSTRALIA TO ASIA CUP BRONZE

Nebraska’s Jaz Shelley dished out an assist to help Australia roll to an 88-58 victory over Korea in the bronze medal game at the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup in Amman, Jordan on Sunday.

Shelley saw four minutes and 30 seconds of action against Korea as the only active collegiate player on the Opal roster.

Shelley will return to Lincoln to continue preparing for the upcoming 2021-22 Nebraska women’s basketball season. The Huskers officially opened practice on Tuesday, Sept. 28, and celebrated “Husker Hoops Opening Night” alongside the men’s basketball team and thousands of Big Red fans at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Friday
