UNK WOMEN DOWN LINCOLN AT HOME:

The No. 4/9 Nebraska-Kearney women’s basketball team started and ended strong to defeat Lincoln, 70-50, Thursday night at the Health & Sports Center.

The Lopers (12-1, 7-0) win an 11th straight game and improve to 11-2 all-time against the Blue Tigers (4-9, 0-7) from Jefferson City, Mo. The two teams will meet again on Feb. 19.

UNK scored 17 of the first 19 points and then tallied 21 points in the fourth quarter. The Blue & Gold garnered 21 points off 21 offensive rebounds

The Lopers host defending Central Region champion Central Missouri Saturday at 2 p.m. The Jennies (9-6, 5-3) fell Thursday at nationally-ranked Fort Hays State, 84-59.

NEBRASKA GIRLS BASKETBALL SHOWCASE KICKS OFF SATURDAY MORNING:

The 2nd Annual Nebraska Girls Basketball showcase tournament kicks off on Saturday morning at Kearney High School. The Showcase, created by Broken Bow girls basketball head coach Kelly Cooksley, is intended to show off the top talent in teams, coaches, and athletes from across the state of Nebraska.

Admission for the day at Kearney High School is $10. The list of games include:

Amy Williams, Head Coach for Nebraska Women’s Basketball, spoke on Sports Nightly on Thursday night and was asked what motivated her team to dominate a Top Ten Michigan team earlier this week… 

The Huskers return to action on Saturday taking on No. 21 Iowa at Pinnacle Bank Arena. 

 

WILLIAMS – FUN TO COACH HUSKERS

Head Coach of the Nebraska Women’s Basketball team Amy Williams joined Sports Nightly on Thursday night and added this start to the season has been some of the most fun coaching of her career so far… 

The Huskers are 13-1 on the season and sit at 2-1 in Big Ten play with No. 21 Iowa coming to Lincoln on Saturday. 

 

WILLIAMS – PROUD AND CONFIDENT IN MARKOWSKI

Freshman Alexis Markowski made her first career start against Michigan earlier this week and aided the Huskers in the upset win with 20 points. Head Coach Amy Williams added on Sports Nightly on Thursday that her team has always been confident in the Lincoln native… 

Markowski is likely to start again on Saturday against No. 21 Iowa at Pinnacle Bank Arena. 

 

LOPER WRESTLING TO FACE DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMP:

The fifth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team dominated 11th-ranked Ashland (Ohio) University, 40-3, Thursday afternoon at the U.S. Marine Corps/NWCA Multi-Division National Duals in Louisville, Ky.

UNK (4-1) received a third seed in the D2 bracket and thus got a first-round bye. The Ashland Eagles beat Fort Hays State, 24-15, Thursday morning to advance to the quarters. The Lopers used two tech falls, a fall and injury default, to improve to 2-3 all-time vs. AU.

The Lopers face second-ranked, second-seeded and defending national champion St. Cloud State (7-0) today at 10 a.m. (Central) in one semifinal match.

 

NEBRASKA BASEBALL RATED TOP 25 IN FIRST PRE-SEASON POLL:

Nebraska has a top-25 baseball team in the eyes of the first major preseason poll released Thursday.

The Huskers start at No. 22 according to Perfect Game and are the only ranked Big Ten program. 

Two of their regular-season opponents are also ranked in No. 8 TCU — which NU faces for three games at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, Feb. 25-27 — and No. 24 Long Beach State, which comes to Haymarket Park on March 11-13.

Nebraska went 34-14 last year, playing all of its games in a Big Ten-only schedule and an NCAA regional at Arkansas.

 

FORMER HUSKER COACH RILEY NEW COACH AT USFL:

The New Jersey Generals are returning this spring, and the resurrected USFL club now has a leader for its locker room.

Mike Riley was named the head coach of the Generals on Thursday, the league announced. He joins Bart Andrus (Philadelphia Stars), Todd Haley (Tampa Bay Bandits) and Kevin Sumlin (Houston Gamblers) as the first four head coaches announced for the first season of the USFL’s revival.

This is the third experimental football league Riley has coached in the last four years.

Riley was 19-19 overall at Nebraska from 2015-2017.

 

NEBRASKA MEN FAIL TO CONTAIN SPARTY:

Four Huskers scored in double figures Wednesday night at Michigan State but NU struggled with its shot in the second half in a 79-67 road loss to the 10th-ranked Spartans.

Nebraska remains on the road for its next game, as the Huskers travel to New Jersey to take on Rutgers Saturday at 1 p.m

 

NEBRASKA MEN’S BASKETBALL POSTGAME COMMENTS:

HOIBERG – GOOD START, COULD NOT FINISH AGAINST SPARTY

Nebraska Men’s Basketball fell on the road at No. 10 Michigan State Wednesday night, and Head Coach Fred Hoiberg said in his postgame comments he was optimistic for the contest after the start by his team… 

Hoiberg and the Huskers travel to Rutgers on Saturday for a 1 PM tip-off.

After a promising start, Nebraska Men’s Basketball fell at Michigan State 79-67 Wednesday night. Head Coach Fred Hoiberg was happy with his team’s efforts in his postgame comments… 

Hoiberg and the Huskers look to end their two game losing skid against Rutgers in New Jersey on Saturday.

 

HOIBERG – CANNOT HAVE EMPTY POSSESSIONS

Head Coach for Nebraska Men’s Basketball Fred Hoiberg said in his postgame comments after the loss to Michigan State that he continues to see improvement, but the Huskers will have to break the bad luck with better offensive possessions… 

Nebraska travels to New Jersey on Saturday to take on Rutgers then returns home on Tuesday night. 

 

NEBRASKA WRESTLING HOSTS PURDUE ON FRIDAY:

The No. 8 Nebraska wrestling team is set to welcome No. 18 Purdue to the Devaney Center on Friday for the opening conference dual for both teams. Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m.

Competition will be fierce as six of ten bouts potentially feature matchups between ranked wrestlers. Six Huskers enter the weekend ranked in the Top 25, including returning All-Americans No. 3 Mikey Labriola (174), No. 5 Eric Schultz (197), No. 6 Peyton Robb (157), No. 8 Ridge Lovett (149), No. 10 Chad Red Jr. (141) and No. 11 Taylor Venz (184). The All-American group boasts a collective 12-1 dual meet record and has scored 58 dual meet points for the Big Red this season.

Prior to NU’s dual, two Nebraska high schools will square off on the Devaney Center floor. Central City and David City Aquinas will grapple beginning at 5 p.m. with doors opening at 4 p.m.

 

FACE COVERINGS BACK IN PLACE AT NEBRASKA EVENTS:

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln announced Wednesday that it will require face coverings indoors, including at University events, until further notice.  This University policy will include all Husker indoor athletic contests at Pinnacle Bank Arena, the Bob Devaney Sports Center, including the arena, indoor track and pool areas, and the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.

Husker fans at all of these venues will be asked to wear a face covering (covering both the nose and mouth) when inside the venue. The University mask policy is effective immediately, with the first home events under the policy being Nebraska’s home wrestling match on Friday vs. Purdue (Devaney Center), the Sunday women’s basketball game vs. Iowa (PBA) and Tuesday night’s men’s basketball game vs. Illinois (PBA).
