The Bearcats entered their rivalry matchup with Grand Island having lost their past four games and had only won once in their previous six contests. Head Coach Kyle Fletcher wanted to get his team back on track, and an excellent opportunity provided itself Friday night as the 1-15 Islanders rolled into Kearney High.
Grand Island’s lone win on the season came in a forfeit victory over Omaha Bryan a week prior, as the Islanders were amidst a building year aiming for development and growth.
The contest started off hot for Kearney as the defense clamped down and smothered Grand Island with a full-court pressure from the opening tip. The Bearcats proceeded to get the scoring going with a three pointer by Tatum Rusher, then working the ball inside to senior Kaleigh Hatcher. Maddy Province added a lay-in as well, as the Bearcats offense put up 17 unanswered in the first quarter.
The second quarter proved to be a cleaner quarter as the Bearcats added scores from six different players and extended their lead to 47-7 at halftime. Kearney emptied their bench and many reserves saw action in the second half, as the Bearcats won 56-13.
