KEARNEY BASEBALL FINISHES OFF COLUMBUS, TAKES ON GRAND ISLAND:

The Kearney High Baseball team finished off Columbus despite late scoring threats by the Discoverers in the sixth and seventh innings as Korben Rich came in relief to end Columbus’ chance for an upset bid. The Bearcats won their fourth game on the season 5-3. 

Now at 4-1 on the season, Kearney takes on their longtime rival Grand Island tonight at 4 PM. Pregame coverage on KGFW begins at 3:50 PM with Austin Jacobsen on the call. 

 

NEBRASKA BASEBALL BATTLES CREIGHTON:

The Nebraska baseball team makes the short trip to Omaha for a midweek matchup at Creighton on Tuesday, March 29 at Charles Schwab Field. First pitch between the Huskers and Bluejays is set for 6:32 p.m.

Nebraska won one of three games in last weekend’s opening series of Big Ten play vs. Michigan. The Huskers won 13-9 on Friday night before falling 8-6 on Saturday and 6-1 in the rubber match on Sunday.

Creighton enters Tuesday night’s midweek matchup with an 11-7 overall record after winning two of three games in last weekend’s series at Wichita State.

 

HUSKER SOFTBALL FACES CREIGHTON AT HOME:

The Nebraska softball team is set to host Creighton in Lincoln, Neb., this Tuesday, March 29. The game which was previously set to start at 5 p.m. will have first pitch at 4 p.m. (CT) at Bowlin Stadium.

Nebraska (21-9) has won the last six games with an offense that leads the Big Ten in numerous categories including hits, runs, home runs, RBIs, total bases, slugging percentage and on base percentage. Billie Andrews leads the Big Ten with a .950 slugging percentage, a combined 1.437 on base and slugging percentage and home runs with 17.

The Huskers are currently ranked No. 1 in the Big Ten Conference with a 183 runs. 

Creighton (13-11) opened Big East play last weekend against Providence, claiming the series, 2-1.

 

HUSKER FOOTBALL SPRING PRACTICE: CHINANDER COMMENTS:

CHINANDER – PLAYERS ARE LEARNING QUICKLY IN SCRIMMAGES

Defensive Coordinator for the Nebraska Football team Erik Chinander spoke to the media after Monday’s practice and added he was pleased with the efforts of his defense to keep improving from the first scrimmage of the spring season to the second… 

The Huskers held a live scrimmage on Saturday morning in front of limited media. Some video is available to be viewed on the Huskers social media pages and at Huskermax.com. 

 

CHINANDER – TACKLING NEEDS TO IMPROVE FOR BLACKSHIRTS

The Blackshirts carry a burden of success from last season into 2022 and defensive coordinator Erik Chinander spoke to the media on Monday about how the Husker defense will need to improve their stock in tackling… 

Chinander was pleased with his defense’s improvement from the first scrimmage of the spring season to the second, as the Huskers will continue to work towards their April 9 Spring Game. 

 

CHINANDER – HOW TO IMPROVE TACKLING IN SPRING SEASON:

The Nebraska defense continues to work towards improvement as they prepare for the April 9 Spring Game at Memorial Stadium. Defensive coordinator Erik Chinander gave a few examples after Monday’s practice as to how the Blackshirts are continuing to work without the presence of live tackling… 

The Huskers defense carried Nebraska through most of 2021 and look to be another strength of the team this season returning several key starters at linebacker.

BOLT – WAITING FOR THE TEAM TO GET HOT FOR LONGER STRETCHES:

Nebraska Baseball has not lived up to its lofty pre-season expectations so far on the season, sitting at 9-11 on the year. Head Coach Will Bolt joined Sports Nightly on Monday and spoke about how he’s looking for his team to start to hit its stride… 

The Huskers take on Creighton on Tuesday night in Omaha. 

 

LOPER SOCCER BEGINS COACHING SEARCH AGAIN:

Nebraska-Kearney Athletic Director Marc Bauer announced today (March 28) that Neil Piper is stepping down as the Lopers head women’s soccer coach.

Piper was announced as the fourth head coach in program history at a press conference on February 17 and began his duties on March 1. He has held meetings and led practices with the team this month. 

Piper was quoted as saying his departure due to family circumstances. UNK began its spring practice window earlier this month and will continue to work out through April. With Piper at the helm, the Lopers tallied a 3-0 home win over the College of St. Mary on Sunday (March 27). 

A new head coach has been identified and the announcement of that hiring is forthcoming.

 

LOPER T&F START OUTDOOR SEASON STRONG:

The Nebraska-Kearney track and field team had 32 top 10 finishes and six national list efforts at the annual Emporia State Relays this weekend in Kansas.

The two-day meet began Friday afternoon and featured junior college, NAIA schools and NCAA Division I and II schools. Many of the events had at least 40 competitors with one numbering over 100. The meet was scored with the women tallying 49 points to be eighth out of 25 with the Loper men netting 58.50 to be seventh of 29.

On Friday, Kearney sophomore Grace Bonsall won the 5,000 with a career-best time of 17:23.30. The Lopers other winner was another Kearney native in Brayden Sorensen. He led a field of 21 high jumpers on Saturday by clearing 7-0.25, currently second in D2. KHS grad Richard Harbols was four spots back (6-5) as well.

The Central Nebraska Challenge is set for next Saturday at KHS. Action begins at 11 a.m. with running starting at 3 p.m.
