KEARNEY BASEBALL USES STRONG FIFTH INNING TO WIN OVER ISLANDERS:

The Kearney Baseball team edged past their rival Grand Island on Tuesday afternoon, avoiding the late storm to pass through the area enroute to a 4-3 victory to improve to 5-1 on the year.

Riley Miller came in relief to earn the save on the day, while Kearney scored all their runs in the fifth inning.

Kearney now continues their long stretch of contests this week taking on Lincoln East on the road on Thursday with first pitch set for 4:30 PM.

NEBRASKA BASEBALL EDGED BY CREIGHTON

Nebraska fell 3-2 in a midweek matchup at Creighton on Tuesday night at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.

The Huskers (9-14) scored two runs on eight hits and committed one error, while the Bluejays (12-7) totaled three runs on five hits and had five errors.

Cam Chick was 2-for-4 with a double and Core Jackson went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Brice Matthews, Garrett Anglim, Core Jackson and Nick Wimmers recorded one hit apiece.

The Huskers threatened in the eighth after Chick led off with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. Max Anderson was hit by the pitch to put runners on first and third with no outs before the Bluejays retired the next three batters to keep the Huskers from tying the game.

Nebraska steps back into Big Ten play this weekend, as the Huskers travel to Columbus, Ohio, for a three-game series at Ohio State on Friday-Sunday, April 1-3.

HUSKER SOFTBALL DOMINATES CREIGHTON IN ONE-HIT SHUTOUT:

Olivia Ferrell tossed a one-hit shutout and Nebraska slugged three home runs as the Husker softball team picked up its seventh straight win with a 15-0 five-inning victory over Creighton Tuesday afternoon at Bowlin Stadium.

Ferrell (12-4) was brilliant in the circle while tossing her fourth career shutout. She fanned eight batters in only five innings. Ferrell allowed just one single and walked one batter on the afternoon.

Cam Ybarra led the Big Red, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Mya Felder was 1-for-1 with a double and one RBI while Abbie Squier added a two-run home run. Caitlynn Neal recorded her first home run of her career while finishing with two RBIs. Peyton Glatter added a double and two RBIs and Ava Bredwell finished the afternoon 1-for-3.

Nebraska improved to 22-9 on the season with its seventh straight win. The Huskers return to Bowlin Stadium this weekend for a three-game series against Rutgers.

HAIBY TO RETURN AS SUPER SENIOR FOR HUSKER WOMEN:

Sam Haiby announced on Tuesday that she will return for a fifth season with the Nebraska women’s basketball team in 2022-23.

The two-time All-Big Ten guard from Moorhead, Minn., ranks No. 15 on Nebraska’s all-time scoring list with 1,381 points and eighth on NU’s career assist list with 414. She has played in 117 games with 87 starts as a Husker. She is the only player in school history to achieve the combined career milestones of 1,000 points, 500 rebounds (532) and 400 assists.

Haiby has averaged double digits as a scorer in each of her first four seasons as a Husker, including 11.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 2021-22 to help Nebraska to a 24-9 record, a final No. 23 NET ranking and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

WALKER SET TO MAKE HUSKER RETURN:

The Nebraska men’s basketball program will return its leading rebounder next season, as Derrick Walker Jr. announced Tuesday that he will return to Nebraska for the 2022-23 season.

Walker is utilizing his fifth season of eligibility and has started all 48 games at Nebraska since becoming eligible in January of 2021 after transferring from Tennessee.

Last season, Walker was the only Husker to start all 32 games, averaging 9.5 points per game while pacing the Huskers with 6.0 rebounds per game. Walker shot 68.3 percent from the field, breaking NU’s single-season mark for field goal percentage which had stood since the 1975-76 season.

NFL ANNOUNCES NEW OVERTIME RULES:

During the owner’s meeting for the National Football League, the NFL has adopted new overtime rules for playoff contests.

Both teams will now have the opportunity to possess the ball in overtime in the postseason. If the score is tied after each team has possessed the ball, the next score of any kind wins.

If the team kicking off to start the overtime period scores a safety on the receiving team’s initial possession, the team that kicked off is the winner.

This new rule will take effect for the upcoming season.

ANGLIM NAMED BIG TEN FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK:

Redshirt freshman Garrett Anglim has been named the Big Ten Baseball’s Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

The La Vista, Neb., native hit .500 with three doubles, seven RBI, two runs and a stolen base in last weekend’s three-game series vs. Michigan.

Anglim led the Huskers in Friday’s 13-9 win over the Wolverines, going 2-for-4 at the plate with career-high totals of two doubles and six RBI.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL SPRING PRACTICE COMMENTS: MIKE DAWSON:

DAWSON – LEARNING HOW PLAYERS PERFORM WHILE FATIGUED

Outside Linebackers and defensive line coach Mike Dawson spoke to the media during Monday’s press conferences and addressed how he sees the opportunity to see his defenders play while tired in practice…

Dawson added that the inexperience on the defensive line does help in every position, continuing to learn new roles during spring camp.

DAWSON – SETTING GOOD HABITS IN SPRING:

Outside Linebackers and defensive line coach Mike Dawson spoke about his biggest goal for the spring practice period for the Huskers: setting good habits sooner rather than later…

Dawson has a mix of relative experience with his edge rusher group but will be bringing up inexperienced interior defensive lineman with the departure to Damion Daniels to the NFL.

DAWSON – NO GRADES SO FAR IN THE SPRING:

Nebraska football assistant coach Mike Dawson was asked to hand out grades to his defensive lineman and edge rushers at Monday’s spring practice press conference, but he felt that the grades may be incomplete so far…

The Huskers continue spring practices leading into their April 9 Spring Game at Memorial Stadium.
