FORMER HUSKERS SELECTED IN ROUND TWO OF NFL DRAFT:

Two former Huskers were selected in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday night.

Cam Jurgens became the first Husker taken, as he went No. 51 overall by the Philadelphia Eagles.  Jurgens, a 303-pound center from Beatrice, Neb., became the highest drafted Husker since Prince Amukamara in 2011, and NU’s first second-round selection since Ameer Abdullah and Randy Gregory were both tabbed in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Cam Taylor-Britt gave Nebraska a pair of second-round picks for the first time since 2015, as he was taken by the Cincinnati Bengals (No. 60 overall).

Taylor-Britt was the first Husker cornerback taken in the NFL Draft since Stanley Jean-Baptiste was a second-round pick in 2014. Taylor-Britt joins the reigning AFC champions who are coached by former Husker great Zac Taylor.

UNK SOFTBALL SWEPT BY NORTHEASTERN STATE:

Senior left fielder Sydney Balderrama hit three home runs to help Northeastern State sweep a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 4-2 and 9-5, Friday afternoon in Tahlequah, Okla.

The RiverHawks improve to 26-23 (14-10) while the Lopers are now 23-23 (13-11). NSU is 9-1 vs. UNK in Tahlequah since the 2014 season.

UNK can earn its first-ever trip to the eight-team MIAA Tournament three ways this weekend; with one win tomorrow at No. 6 Rogers State (41-9, 18-6), if Newman (18-26, 9-13) losses one game at Missouri Southern (24-21, 12-10) or Pittsburg State (22-25, 4-18) or if MSSU goes 0-4. NU swept UNK earlier this month to have the tie-breaker between the two with MSSU facing nationally-ranked Central Oklahoma over the next two days.

LOPER TENNIS SEASON ENDS TO NORTHWEST MISSOURI:

The 46th-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats eliminated 50th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, 4-0, from the 2022 MIAA Tournament Friday in Edmond, Okla.

The Lopers (11-10) see its season come to an end as it needed to beat the Bearcats (15-8) in order to make the NCAA Tournament. In the most recent NCAA Central Region Rankings, UNK was seventh and Northwest six; the top six teams qualify for regionals. The ‘Cats already owned a 4-3 win over Kearney earlier this spring.

To beat UNK for a sixth straight time, fourth-seeded Northwest rallied at number three doubles (7-6; 8-6) and took three singles matches in straight sets.
