HUSKER FOOTBALL HIT WITH MINOR PENALTIES:

The NCAA released its decision Monday morning on an investigation into the Nebraska football program.

The agreement from the Division I Committee on Infractions says the Nebraska football program violated NCAA rules for countable coaches and the head coach violated head coach responsibility rules.

The report says a former special teams analyst “provided technical or tactical instruction to student-athletes during practices and film sessions.” It goes on to say the analyst also assisted in tactical decisions during games, and that because he was a non coaching staff member, his instruction put Nebraska over the number of permissible coaches.

The penalties levied against Frost and the program include: A $10,000 fine, a five-day suspension from all coaching duties during the championship segment of the 2022 football season, and a A reduction of the number of football countable coaches by one for two days of practice during the spring 2022 season, among others.

UNK WOMEN’S GOLF TIED FOR SEVENTH IN MIAA REGIONALS:

The 43rd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney women’s golf team shot a 318 and is tied for seventh after the first day of the NCAA Central Regional in Hot Springs, Ark.

The three-day, 54-hole event is hosted by No. 13 Henderson State at the Hot Springs C.C. (par 72; 5,932 yards). There were several weather delays throughout the day with rain again in the forecast for Tuesday. It’ll likely be overcast for round three.

The Lopers are currently led by Puerto Rico senior Faviola Gonzalez and Colombian freshman Juliana Botero Molina (both 6-over 78). Gonzalez had one birdie (third hole) and 10 pars with Molina at 11 pars and a birdie (ninth hole).

STORM COMPLETE PHASE I OF USHL DRAFT:

The Tri-City Storm completed the first phase of the 2022 USHL Draft on Monday by drafting seven players in the ten-round draft. Tri-City drafted three forwards, four defensemen, and no goaltenders.

The Storm also acquired two players through the USHL’s tender process to replace the team’s 1st and 2nd Round picks in Monday’s draft.

The Storm signed defenseman Matthew Virgilio and forward Trevor Connelly to a tender agreement in March. Today’s USHL Phase I Draft, formerly known as the “Futures Draft”, was open to 2006 birth year players only. Phase II of the 2022 USHL Draft will begin today at 10:00am CT and is open to players of all ages who are eligible to play junior hockey next season.

A full list of signees and draftees can be found here.

KEARNEY BASEBALL FINAL REGULAR SEASON GAME CANCELED AT BURKE:

The Kearney High baseball team will have to wait to postseason play to hit the diamond again as the Bearcats final regular season contest of the year was canceled today on the road at Omaha Burke.

Kearney ends the regular season at 15-8 on the year and awaits their postseason draw and seeding for district tournament action starting on Friday.

KGFW will carry live coverage of Kearney High Baseball as far as the Bearcats go into postseason play.

CARDINALS’ HOPKINS SUSPENDED FOR PED POLICY:

The Arizona Cardinals are going to have to figure out a way to score points and win games without their top receiver.

Three-time All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins has been suspended without pay for six games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, the league announced Monday.

Hopkins issued a statement on social media Monday night, saying he was “confused and shocked” to learn he tested positive for a banned substance.

METS CUT TIES WITH CANO:

Robinson Canó was cut Monday by the New York Mets with nearly $45 million remaining on his contract, ending an ill-fated marriage and perhaps signaling the end of his decorated major league career.

The slumping Canó was designated for assignment in a move announced about an hour before teams were required to trim their active rosters from 28 players to 26. Relegated to a part-time role this season, Canó was a casualty of the crunch as the first-place Mets chose to keep younger, more versatile bench players instead.

The 39-year-old Canó, who sat out last season while serving his second suspension for performance-enhancing drugs, is batting .195 (8 for 41) with one home run, three RBIs and a paltry .501 OPS in 43 plate appearances.
