Board Member Clarissa Feldman and Vendor Candy Benge with the Kearney Area Farmers Market joined Associate News Director Liz Macias on Talk of The Town today.

The Area Farmer’s Market has been hosted in Kearney since the 1970’s, Feldman explains. As of now, the market is located at Hilltop Mall, with hours being from 8am to 1pm Saturdays, and, starting in June, 2 to 6pm Wednesdays as well.

Feldman discusses that this is her first year on the board, and wants to bring awareness to people in Kearney and the surrounding area about the Farmer’s Market. Feldman also wants those shopping to enjoy the local goods being sold there, among which being fruits, vegetables, and meats.

Food isn’t the only thing sold at the market however. Various craft, photography, and plant vendors are also selling at the farmer’s market, and even Long Dogs Distilling from Arapahoe will be selling at the market this year.

Candy Benge, a former member of the board, and vendor, mentions how much the market has grown in size over the past 4 years she has been attending.

Benge also goes over the newly developed SNAP program which was created with the help of various Kearney area partners and foundations. The SNAP program allows the farmer’s market to be able to accept those benefits, so people can purchase local fresh veggies and other products sold at the market, instead of shopping at larger chain stores.
