RUNZA SENIORS RUN-RULED IN OPENING GAME:

Grand Island Home Federal took advantage of double-digit walks given up by Kearney’s Runza Seniors and completed a run-rule victory with a 2-RBI Single in the bottom of the sixth to win 9-1. 

The Runza Seniors now take on a gauntlet of contests, as they participate in the Hastings/Grand Island tournament Friday through Sunday, followed by a road contest at Columbus on Tuesday and a home stand against Hastings on Wednesday. 

KGFW’s next broadcast will be in Columbus’ Pawnee Park on Tuesday evening. 

 

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL OFFERS FREMONT-BERGAN’S KADE McINTYRE:

Nebraska football extended an in-state offer on Thursday afternoon, offering 2023 Archbishop Bergan (Neb.) athlete Kade McIntyre. In his message announcing the offer, McIntyre thanked Nebraska head coach Scott Frost and inside linebackers coach Barrett Ruud.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound McIntyre has seen has recruitment take off this spring, picking up offers from Iowa, Kansas State, Minnesota, Wyoming and Tennessee.

McIntyre is a three-star prospect according to 247Sports, holding a rating of 88. McIntyre is the No. 8 prospect in Nebraska according to 247Sports and becomes the eighth in-state offer in the 2023 class.

 

HUSKER BASEBALL SENIOR CHICK FORGOES SENIOR SEASON:

Husker senior Cam Chick announced Thursday he is forgoing a fifth season with Nebraska baseball.

Chick started in all but two games for the Huskers in 2022. He finished the season with 43 hits, 26 RBIs, eight home runs and a batting average of .251.  

In 2019, Chick was named to the All-Big Ten freshman team as well as second-team All-Big Ten.

 

UNK’S ARENS REACHES STEEPLE FINALS IN NCAA OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Nebraska-Kearney distance runners Ben Arens, Myles Bach and Luke Stuckey competed Thursday at the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in Allendale, Mich.

Arens (Ainsworth) will be an All-American in the steeplechase as he turned in a career-best 8:52.43 to be fifth in the first heat and 11th overall. The top four finishers in each heat, plus the next four best times, reached the finals in both the steeple and 1,500-meter run.

In the 1,500 prelims in the late afternoon, Stuckey (McCool Junction) also closed fast (55.49) but missed making the finals and earning his third All-American honor by just 0.27 seconds. He was sixth in his heat and 14th overall. 

Finally, to close out the night, Bach (Cedar Rapids, Ia.) started fast in aiming to join Bobby Brindamour (1994) as UNK’s only 10k All-Americans. He was in the top three over the first 2,400 meters but ended up 21st (31:20.15).

 

LOPERS COMPETING AT NCAA T&F CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Nine members of the Nebraska-Kearney track and field team are competing this weekend at the 2022 NCAA Division II Championships in Michigan.

Lopers competing today include: three-time All-American Brayden Sorensen (Kearney) getting things started today in the high jump (2:30 p.m. Central) with super senior Anna Squiers (Kearney Catholic) throwing the discus at 4 p.m.

At 5 p.m. tonight Fremont native Wes Ferguson takes part in the 800-meter prelims. He was the national champ in this event at the indoor meet.

On Saturday, Kansas natives Evan Prohaska (9:30 a.m. Central) and Jaida McEwen (12:30 p.m. Central) throw the javelin.

Finally, O’Neill sophomore Abby Everitt looks to repeat as an All-American in the high jump (1:05 p.m. Central) on Saturday.

 

NEBRASKA T&F QUALIFY FOUR WOMEN FOR NATIONALS:

Four Nebraska track and field women qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with their performances at the NCAA West Preliminary Round on Thursday, giving the Huskers a combined seven qualifiers at the midway point of the four-day meet. 

Freshman thrower Axelina Johansson is on her way to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the shot put for the first time. Sophomore Maddie Harris will compete in the javelin at Eugene for the second year in a row. 

Joining Harris in the javelin at nationals for the second year in a row will be Mirta Kulisic, who threw 168-3 (51.29m) to qualify with the ninth-best throw.

Finally, LaQwasia Stepney qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in her Husker career.

The Husker men are back in action at the NCAA West Preliminary Round on Friday with seven athletes set to compete

 

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL ANNOUNCES KICK-OFF TIMES FOR SEVEN GAMES:

An evening kickoff in Dublin and a national stage for a traditional rivalry highlight seven Nebraska kickoff times announced by the Big Ten Conference.

Nebraska will open its 2022 season Week Zero against Northwestern in Dublin’s Aviva Stadium. Kickoff will be at 5:30 local time in Dublin (11:30 a.m. CT) with the game televised on FOX.

Following the opener, Nebraska returns to Lincoln for a four-game homestand, including three non-conference matchups. The highlight of the homestand is a Sept. 17 visit to Memorial Stadium by Oklahoma. The matchup of long-time rivals will be televised as part of FOX’s Big Noon package with kickoff at 11 a.m. Central. Fox will also bring the Big Noon Kickoff pregame show to Lincoln for the Nebraska-Oklahoma tilt.

Nebraska’s home opener against North Dakota on Sept. 3 will kick off at 2:30 p.m. (Central) on BTN. The Sept. 10 home contest against Georgia Southern will be televised under the lights at Memorial Stadium with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff on FS1.

Nebraska’s contests with Indiana will be set in a prime-time matchup, while the Friday, Oct. 7 contest at Rutgers receives a 6 PM kickoff. Finally, the Black Friday matchup with Iowa is staged for a 3 PM game.
